Re: Shipping per category

YUP this is EXACTLY What I am looking for. If anyone has ANY IDEAS how to get this it would be Much Appreciated. This is the only thing holding me back from using ZenCart.

I feel this mod would be a GREAT GREAT ASSET to the ZenCart Community as it would elevate alot of headaches trying to decipher ratios and stuff in the shipping per_unit_weight stuff. I have been in these forums off and on and see SO MANY PEOPLE having a hard time grasping this Ratio stuff as I am.

Some people have the know how on how to setup the ratios and others don't like I. THerefore they have 2 options pay someone $100 - $200 for the mod or go elsewhere and use another commerce program that offers this exact same Shipping method which I currently am using. I myself cannot afford at this time someone to create this mod for my client and my client does not want to pay that kind of money as of yet due to a new store and no money coming in.

I Love the features that Zencart has to offer as opposed to the other commerce software I am currently using as well as the functionality of ZenCart too, but unfortuantely I am unable to use ZenCart just for this shipping situation I am in.

But anyways, if anyone knows how to get it since the link is no longer valid could you please post.

Thanks much in Advance.

Re: Shipping per category

I don't have that one, however I have an older shipping per product mod that doesn't work with the 1.3+ carts that I saved.

If anyone wants a copy just pm me your email address.

Is that the shipping by attributes where you can put the amount in total it costs indicidual items to be shipped as opposed to using the USPS, UPS, etc. charts based on weights and zones?

Re: Shipping per category

No this is where you use the products_weight as the shipping cost for that item ...

You could also add attribute weight to add more shipping cost, btw ...

Re: Shipping per category

We have a dropship source that sets it's own shipping weight per item. I don't know what it is based on, just that each item (over 10,000 items) has a unique shipping amount.

Adding it as an attribute amount to each item is the only thing I can think of doing in case a customer orders an item from a different vendor in the same order as an item from this supplier.

Am I one the right track?

Re: Shipping per category

Then again that could be something different ...

You could always add it as a contribution and people can explore it further if they need it ...

Re: Shipping per category

I didn't think of posting it as a contribution because I didn't write it, I had either found it in the older forum or had d/l it from the authors site: http://www.zen-cart.cn plus it's for pre 1.3x versions. If it's been upgraded I can't tell since the site is in Chinese.

I'm looking at OSC and ZC primarily but am considering a commercial cart as well.

One of my primary requirements is the ability to calculate shipping in two ways:

Per individual item - first item $x.xx additional items $y.yy

Per category - first item $x.xx additional items $y.yy

An example of the per category requirement:

In category "Women's Shoes" we need to be able to combine any items in that category for a "First Item Plus" scheme. So that spectator pumps could be combined in shipping with running shoes.

Does anyone know how to do this in ZC?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Shipping per category

This would need to be custom coded as it is not an available shipping method in Zen Cart by default ...

While it is not an impossible to write shipping module, it will require quite a bit of customization ...

There are also several considerations on by category and what you think by category means and what by category really means, in respect to proper calculations ...

Per Item has several connotations ...

Per Item from a list of 27 Products, where 1 item is $7.00 and each additional item is $5.00 ...

Per First quantity 1 of a Product and then an additional charge, where Widgets quantity 8 charges $7.00 for 1st Widget and $5.00 for each additional Widget, then Golf balls charges $3.00 for 1st Golf ball and $1.75 for each additional Golf ball ...

The first case on Per Item is already built into Zen Cart ...

The second case on Per Item per Product is not built into Zen Cart, but it could be written ...

Linda, thank you very much for your rapid and helpful response.

I'm frankly leaning toward a commercial solution like for a couple of reasons:

  1. Its base functionality covers all of these common needs.

  2. The "modules" which aren't really very modular in OSC and ZC lead me to think that the act of adding them will soon make the software unupgradable (is that a word?).

#2 above keeps me from forging ahead and making those mods. If this is not the case (that there is a way to upgrade a system after patch upon patch has been applied) please tell me where to find the docs on the API and I will reconsider.

Thanks again!
-Tommy

Re: Shipping per category

We cannot guarantee that you will not need to update your custom code with a new release ... however, we can guarantee that you can have custom code with Zen Cart, where the commercial products are more or less fixed in what they can or cannot do ...

Backups of your database and site for both the core code and custom code will help you in managing your files ... utilizing the templates and overrides also will help you on this ...

Re: Shipping per category

Could I set it up to put media into a category that would go with media mail shipping? The prob I am running into is that my media is very expensive to ship priority, but when I put a media shipping option people abuse it and choose it when they don't purchase media.

Re: Shipping per category

Hey,

I have a problem with the Per Category Shipping. It works perfectly for the catgories that I want it to work for, however it gives a "Free Shipping" option to all other products in other categories. I want it to not show up if the item bought is not in the category specified.

Is that possible?

Thanks
