How to set-up a category?

Hi there,

I would like to create custom categories. I can't seem to find where I create a new category? Under Catalog -> categories/products all I get is a button to make a new product and under product type I can only edit existing product types.

Please help,

Thank you!

Re: How to set-up a category?

Categories hold Products or Categories ...

When a Category holds a Category the New Product button will disappear ...

When a Category holds a Product the New Category button will disappear ...

It sounds like you have added Product(s) to the top level Category so you are unable to create a Category ...

Delete the Product(s) and you can build your Categories and Products correctly ...

NOTE: If you already have both mixed together ... move the Products to a Category ...

Re: How to set-up a category?

disregard that last post...
I added to the db tables zc_categories & zc_categories_description the categories that I wanted to add (6 of them) and once I moved the products to these new categories the 'new category' button showed up just like Ajeh said :)

We have 10 categories.. CD Singles, CD Albums etc. etc.. all well and good.. now we have not yet managed to get any products in.

We get "NOTE: Category has SubCategories Products cannot be added ".

so can somebody supply a URL to an idiots giode to installing categoies and items

We have 20k vinyl records, and cds.. so need to be able to add all artists, Labels, etc from .TXT files also..

any help would be welcomed.

Re: How to set-up a category?

If you are all the way into a Category and see no SubCategories ... you will see the New Product button ...

Next to it is a Dropdown for what Product type you are trying to add ...

Do you see this on your screen?

Re: How to set-up a category?

what we have is your demo data..

Categories / Products - Top[ Go To: TopHardware

Attributes Discount Qty Downloads Text Pricing Real Real Sale Music Documents Mixed Product Types IDCategories / ProductsModelPrice/Special/Sale Quantity StatusSortAction

Categories: 18

Products: 0 NEW CAT

NOTE: Category has SubCategories
Products cannot be added

with all yours + 10 new cats.. we get no different details on any cat...

Now i click on eg 1 Hardware.. it does nothing, don't show any sub underneath it or nowt..

Re: How to set-up a category?

Do you have any good data on this install?

It sounds like somewhere along the way you may have tried to manually clean out the tables and have broken the relationships between them ...

Fresh install using your demo data.

Have add 1 new category... which is CD Singles..

Click on that in GO TO : And it don't :(

In fact we can't add any products under any category.

Re: How to set-up a category?

Personally ...

I would empty the database ...

Reload all files ...

Delete the files:
/includes/configure.php
/admin/includes/configure.php

rename the files:
/includes/dist-configure.php
/admin/includes/dist-configure.php

to the new filenames:
/includes/configure.php
/admin/includes/configure.php

Set those two files to 777 and do a clean install ...

Note: the current version of Zen Cart is v1.3.7 and I would start with a clean download from our Downloads link at the top of your screen ...

Did all this.. three times already.. I am a techie, and i am struggling.. gawd knows what would happen if the client had to do all this.

With oscommerce We swapped from they had a cat and a prod adder :).

Thanks for your help.. I think we'll give it a miss... spent to much time on this already...

Re: How to set-up a category?

Click on the SubCategory you added and you will see that you can add either New Product or New Category ...

Depending on which you add first the other will disappear when you are done ...

Re: How to set-up a category?

If you have a Category with Categories it cannot have Products ...

Did you add a Category within a Category? If so, click on the subcategory so you do not see any more categories ... now you can add a product ...

If you still cannot, then either you upload is bad or your database tables are bad ...

We have nothing in there....

Empty database, free install from your site .zip file..

TOP is listed with no categories.. I clicked on Add Category, entered details, and saved..

now have

2 test cat 2

.. the zip file was from your site.... so i would be very miffed if its corrupted,.. and with zip they tend not to open if damaged.

Re: How to set-up a category?

I would have to actually get into your phpMyAdmin and see what is up with your database itself ...

I can see it doesn't work right ... so either you have bad upload on files or your database table is moofy ...

Re: How to set-up a category?

I am having the same problem that kinaton had. I just did my second clean install of 1.38a and still get the same results. My page works fine until I add products. I can add a million subcategories and the page loads fine. The minute I add a product you just end up with a white page. I have added a test product for the categories I am testing with.

One is a Category-SubCategory-Product=

The second is Category - Product = Blank page

Third is just Category - This one opens as long as no products are added

I get the same result with each except for the category with no product. Here is the page I am having the trouble with.
