Gift Wrapping Contribution

What you may not realize about contributions is that they are not of uniform quality. Some are well written, some are not. Some are actively supported, some are not. Some are fully debugged, others are not.

Free Gift updates a number of core files and yet has not been updated since Zen Cart 1.3.8. This is a sign that you probably don't want to use it on a newer cart.

Sorry about that told you guys the wrong module names.

I have "edit orders" and "free gifts - 3rd party mod. I believe the free gifts module doesn't cause any issues. I reinstalled it twice, nothing!!
Well Edit Orders can't be the culprit since it is an ADMIN add-on and would in no way affect your CHECKOUT process..

Re: Gift Wrapping Contribution

Agreed. BTW @selcyis, Edit Orders is an example of a plugin which is well written and actively supported. Thanks, @DivaVocals!

Wasn't there an older version of GW that is/was(?) compatible with FEC?

There was, but nobody seems to know which version. there is still some code integrated in the FEC and FEAC modules, but if you ask Numinix which version you need, there is no answer :dontgetit

Re: Gift Wrapping Contribution

I believe that Numinix's solution to this issue is a separate Gift Wrap module which is specifically designed around his FEC module. Some (or perhaps all) of this is commercial work; it's not free.

Gift Wrap at Checkout was designed around the standard, built-in Zen Cart checkout. It depends on the multi-page nature of the Zen Cart checkout.

I had (store now closed) GW and FEC 1.10 working fine together on a 1.3.9h. It was an older version of GW, without swatches etc but it did offer wrapping options at checkout. I can look up the version number tonight if anyone was interested?

Not directly needed, but it is always nice to have the information for future reference

Re: Gift Wrapping Contribution

Hey guys,

I installed this module for my customer but however, she doesn't want to use this module right now.

So I wonder how can I "disable" this add-on? <NOT "remove", I think she will use it later>

Thanks!

Re: Gift Wrapping Contribution

Admin->modules->order total->gift wrapping->remove. Then when you want it back, just install it again.

Thank you for reply swguy.

Don't I need to delete any codes from any php files??

Re: Gift Wrapping Contribution

I believe they all check the status of the installation, but you should double check.

Thanks again swguy.

An additional question about the process step here.

I am using ZC 1.3.9h. It seems current process step is Select gift wrapping option at Step 1 of 3 "Delivery Information". So customers need to determine "Shipping Address", "Shipping Method", "Gift Wrapping" and put "Special instructions" at this step.

My client feels a little bit complicated and her desired process flow would be:

Click checkout -> Select Gift Wrapping? ->

If YES -> page goes to Step 1 of 3 to determine "Shipping Address", "Shipping Method", "Gift Wrapping" and put "Special instructions".

If NO -> page goes to Step 1 of 3 to determine "Shipping Address", "Shipping Method" and put "Special instructions".

She tries to keep check-out page clean for people who don't choose gift wrapping. I'm not familiar with ZenCart so well and not sure if her idea is doable or there are some restrictions of ZC structure.

Any comments?? Many thanks!!

Re: Gift Wrapping Contribution

It's software. You can make it do what ever you want. :) But it's not clear to me that adding another page in the checkout flow makes it easier.

Once upon a time, long long ago, when Numinix still updated their free mods in the downloads section, they actually DID integrate VERBATIM the code from an older version of this add-on into FEC.. Seach for my user name in the support thread, I think I shared which version of Gift Wrap it was..

After that Scott is right.. When Numinix began transitioning into a more commercial mod kind of org (and stopped updating their free mods here), they did indeed integrate their own giftwrap module into FEC..

Now personally this and MANY other compatibility issues is why I converted ALL my clients who were using FEC and FEAC to COWOA.. All the issues I had with integrating this module and other checkout/order total modules went away..

nods in agreement and I am not seeing the supposed "benefit" of an alternate workflow.. Seems that it is adding confusion where there is none..

Now if there IS some perceived confusion, it seems that a well placed/well worded on-screen message would close that gap.. It's low hanging fruit and easier to put into place than adding alternate workflows driven by conditional statements.. IJS..
