Prices are all displaying incorrectly

I have a situation that is causing me lots of frustration. This site is supposed to go live tomorrow but I'm stuck and hope someone can help.

Each item is displaying a HIGHER price than what I am entering.

For example, I enter $300, and say it is a taxable item (at 14%) and in the admin it is showing $300 as the net and $384 as the gross (instead of $342). In the catalog (and admin) it displays $333.39 for that item.

I have checked the tax classes and rates over and over - and even redid them. I am still getting the same incorrect result.

An item that I enter as $27.99 net, and is only subject to 8% tax, is displaying in the catalog as $31.11.

In the event that it was SHIPPING causing this, I have disabled all shipping modules - there was no change.

I have checked the ORDER TOTAL module, and don't see anything wrong there either.

I have checked the prices in the table in PHPMYADMIN, and they are correct there too in both the products_price and products_price_sorter (ie. $300 and $27.99 respectively).

Even if I change the product type, there is also no difference.

The higher price is also showing in the admin panel. And both admin panel and catalog are set to "false" for displaying taxes. But I don't think that taxes are the problem, since this number is NOT equal to the tax-included price.

The same (incorrect) price shows on every page (new products, category, shopping cart etc.)

I don't know where else to look!

What is the exchange rate set to for your default currency?
If it's not 1.0000 for the default, you'll find everything is being converted based on the specified exchange rate.

Yes, that was it.

I changed the default currency, but it was adding a conversion factor to everything.

Also, I've been told by a knowledgeable person here that there is a bug in admin which causes that odd value to show in gross price. It apparently is safe to ignore this as it never appears to the customer. Just enter your base price in Products Price (Net) and ignore what appears in Gross below it.

I am also having problems. Products with sale prices are showing correctly on product page but when added to cart they do not reflect the sale price.
