Unabe to log into Admin after renaming admin folder

pts3227:

if I download and start over will it mess up my templates and all my settings?
If you wipe out everything on your server and/or your database, then yes you'll be starting over from scratch, without the data.

The process for renaming the admin folder is clearly spelled out in the FAQ area:

https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=33

I did follow what it said in that article and that when all my problems started. I don't have that file in that location.

"A - Open your admin/includes/configure.php, using a simple text editor like notepad. Change all instances of admin to your chosen new admin folder-name. For maximum security, you may want to consider that new folder name should include numbers and a combination of upper and lower case letters. The longer you make this folder's name the more secure it will be. Make sure you leave all the / intact."

When I follow this step, all I have is a file called "dist-configure.php" it looks exaclty like the one they want me to change, so I did, but it messed everything, but when I put it back, it's still messed up.

I even keep a clean back-up of all my files in a different folder and tried uploading that to my server instead to just use it instead and still can't getin to log in to add inventory. I can go to my site and browse just fine, but can't add inventory... ( https://www.ptrailerusa.com/Products )

How did you install Zen Cart on your server? The file should be created as part of the install.

Re: Unabe to log into Admin after renaming admin folder

Same as many, after all the BS to make the changes the site worked for about 10 days. The renamed admin folder n all did work.

But now all of a sudden for no reason I can't log in.
Just sits there and goes no where when I click login.
All was working just fine a few days ago.

I think its time for an official update and fix of zen, no more backazzwards patches, real fixes.

This has been nothing but a cluster F

Your site won't work if there's not a configure.php file.
But, maybe you set the permissions on the file so low that your FTP program can't see the file? If you use your hosting company's file-manager from their control panel, can you see the file that way?

Also ...

If you have backups as you say, then why not just use the copy of the /admin/includes/configure.php file from your backups -- make a copy of it, make the edits, upload the changed file to your server.

Go back and follow the instructions on recovering from being hacked, as described in the thread where the security patch was posted.

I think I figured that part out, in my online file manager I had the configure.php file, but in my files on my PC where I keep my back-up we hadn't renamed those files liked instructed during the installation of ZenCart. So now I'm stuck as how to fix everything. I have made it so all file names match. Done a clean upload and still nothing. What could I be missing now? Both my site and my login now say "Hello. Thank you for loading Zen Cart™."
Before all of this I was wise enough to make a back up of my database, should I re-install zencart on my server and then upload my database, or is this a bad idea?

That would be as useless as telling you to clean up your stinking attitude.

Upload those changes (after making the file on the server writable), and all should be good.

Let's hope that's not necessary.

Hmmm except I forgot to include the part that I uploaded ALL my backup files from my PC to the server and for some reason now the configure file doesnt seem to work or maybe im just not doing it right. All the files online and offline match now and still get the same screens. does that seem right? I feel retarded. by the way, thank you so much for taking the time in trying to help me!!!!!!

Re: Unabe to log into Admin after renaming admin folder

Post the contents of your (non-admin) /includes/configure.php file (without the password), and let's take it from there.

Re: Unabe to log into Admin after renaming admin folder

I'm assuming that your storefront is working properly, right?

If so, then ...

  1. Use your FTP program to locate, download, and open the /includes/configure.php file (NOT the /admin/includes/configure.php file) using your favorite text editor.
  2. Copy the contents of that file to your clipboard (Edit->Copy)
  3. Click "Reply" on this page.
  4. Paste the contents of your clipboard (Edit->Paste). Find the line that shows your database password, and replace the password with XXXX or something else before clicking Submit to store your reply on the forum.

Re: Unabe to log into Admin after renaming admin folder

That's not good.

Do you have an old good copy of your configure.php files?

If not, you'll need to start fresh. This is the basic process:

  1. Do a full backup of your database. You'll want to protect this in a safe place.
  2. Upload the /zc_install folder to your server.
  3. Do an install (this will wipe your database) as if it were brand new (configure.php files writable, provide database name, username, password, etc)
  4. Do not select demo data.
  5. Test that the basic empty store opens in the browser without errors.
  6. Restore your database from backup.

I thought I did, but I guess I didn't I had everything online in the file manager but I hadn't downloaded it to my PC like I thought. I do however have a clean copy of my database, I copied right before all this and it's in a safe place. I am in the process of reinstalling a clean zencart now, I hope this works! Thank you! Not understanding the demo data part but I will probably remember once I get to that part.

Re: Unabe to log into Admin after renaming admin folder

On the "store setup" screen where you provide the store name and address, there's an option for demo data. Skip it. In fact, all the info on that screen is going to be replaced by the backup. But you'll need to put it in so you can quickly test that the fresh install works ... before restoring the backup.
