looking for tar gz..

hello all
i have some problem with my ftp connection. i cannot upload zencart unzipped to the webserver as it times out after some time. fortunately i can uplaod zip or tar.gz files. but on the server i have only facility to unzip tar.gz files. is it possible to convert the zip to tar.gz on windows

For this, unzip on your PC. then re-compress on your PC as tar.gz.

You can then upload this resulting file.

that is exactly my question. how do i convert it into tar.gz as i am using windows and winzip etc dont compress it ( they do decompress but not compress into tar.gz)

Sorry, I assumed that you had the tools to do this.

You will have to obtain an application for compressing that supports tar.gz. You can google for this and there are many available. A quick search shows this one as FREE, http://www.7-zip.org/ but I have no experience with it and it was only one of the first that came up.

That solution is all very well, but why is it that the zencart team can't offer a simple .tar.gz for the linux community?

Most (probably a significant majority) use, or are familiar with zip.

+1 vote for tarballed distros for people using *nix systems.
