How do I put a background image and edit the left nav menu under product/category ?

to make it look like:

You could also use Better Categories mod from
http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&cPath=40_47&products_id=177
Then substitute an image for colour, using stylesheet included in above mod
