Chosen attribute not showing up in cart

I have followed the stick note on setting up attributes and now have a dropdown box with various colors showing up next to my chosen item which is great. But when I go to add the item to the cart with the attribute chosen (in this case the color red) all I see in the cart is the name of the item but not the attribute. If I add another (say 1 the color of green) it adds itself to the same item in the cart saying there is now 2 when instead of saying 1 red and 1 green as two separate items.
I am using Zen Cart 1.2.x -- is there anything I am doing wrong or is this expected behaviour. If it is normal behavior what do I have to do to get it to work as I was hoping.

There were a lot of v1.2.x ... could you be more specific?

Have you checked if you switch to Classic if this fixes the problem?

Is this a new issue? Have they ever worked?
