where do i put meta description for the index page?

Might be worth mentioning that it might be a good idea to save your modified meta_tags.php in /includes/modules/YOUR_CUSTOM_FILE_NAME/meta_tags.php rather than directly in /includes/modules/meta_tags.php

Ii have read through this post and few others and I still stuck. In my cart I have completed the meta tags and description sections for all categories but I only see the key words when i veiw the pages on the web.

I have corrected this issue for my main page but none of my categories use my descriptions. How can make that happen?

I think this mod is very necessary for the home page "Description"

Is there a mod that would pull this description from the /includes/languages/english/Custom/meta_tags.php file?

That way all the info is in one place and I don't have to remember which meta_tags.php file I edited when I need to make changes.

ALSO when I go to the multi-store module, the info will be in the individual templates.

I am up against a new challenge. My client that I do SEO for on his ZENCART site is using version 1.2.7. Now I know this is behind by a few versions, however, he is reluctant to move up to the latest version.

What the problem is currently with his 1.2.7 version is not being able to meta tag control the category level. I have optimised the main page TITLE, DESCRIPTIVE and KEYWORD tags and I have optimised these at PRODUCT level. But the category level produces in the TITLE TAG - CATAGORY NAME - followed by TITLE TAG applied to the MAIN(INDEX) and the DESCRIPTIVE/KEYWORD tag at category level is identical on every category selected also.

Is there something I can do to overcome this with the version in use 1.2.7 or to have this control would I need to get him up to 1.3.7?

I suppose my next question is how much work is involved if I have to migrate up to 1.3.7 being so far behind?

I edited the includes/modules/meta_tags.php file and got the keyword and description I wanted but now the page title (displayed on the browser tab etc) says META_TAG_TITLE...

any idea why and what to do?

Whilst their was adequate facilities at the product level of ZEN CART that allowed you to write specific TITLE, DESCRIPTIVE and KEYWORD tags for each product thus producing a 'themed' page focused on that product. There were issues at the 'CATEGORY' level where ZEN CART was not providing editorial control to the same level.

Thanks for this code. it will make it much easier to add the exact description tag that I want to my homepage.

But one more thing. Everyone seems to understand how to add specific title, keywords and description tags to each individual product and each individual category pages, but how do you do that??

I have searched for 'meta tags', and read loads of messages, but can't seem to find the answer. I am a new user, therefore sorry if the answer is obvious!

in your admin, on the categories page, to the far right of each one you have, there is a circle divided into four sections, two of them colored. should say meta tag when you mouse over. click that and you set the meta tag for the category. then go into each category to do the same thngs for the products within each.

I think a point is being missed here about what I have been asking.

I have a number of clients who have came our way with older versions of ZEN Cart.

My problem is many of them are tight fisted and don't want to spend lots of money, but expect ranking results from us. Whilst it has already been explained how long that in itself can take, the other problem is them not willing to upgrade to the latest MOD for their ZEN cart site to gain the benefits of improved Meta Tag control.

So, my question again is this, if I have to work with these older versions of Zen Cart, is there areas whereby I can make some changes in order to support the CATEGORY level areas with bespoke Title and Descriptive tags. OR do I walk away from these clients and have to tell them OK accept you have a limited budget, but you can't improve the sites performance on the older versions of Zen Cart when it comes to SEO/SEM.

Is there someone in this forum who is still on older versions of the product but having success by being able to 'theme' CATEGORY level pages of their site through some form of a TWEAK.

There are significant coding changes required to adapt older versions to incorporate the new functionality. Upgrading is the "best" solution, particularly considering that there are a myriad of other important benefits in doing so.
