Shipping cost based directly on weight?

HI,

I've recently taken over the running of an existing cart. I don't have contact with the original administrator so I am trying to figure out what way things have been set up.

The way shipping seems to be set up is that it is directly based on the weight of an item - ie if the weight of an item is 6 then the customer will be charged $6 for shipping. The shipping method that shows up in the customers cart is table rate, however changing the table rate in the admin doesnt seem to affect the shipping costs at all.

I need to change the way shipping is set up but this limitation is driving me crazy. How do I stop it from doing this so I can set up one of the other shipping methods? At the moment changing (disabling/editing) the shipping methods the admin doesnt seem to do anything ie the only way I can change the shipping cost of an item is to change its weight. I have looked at the code and there doesnt seem to be any customisations.
