Manufacturers - silly question

I will admit that attempting to discover new aspects of zen on a sunday morning with the many other distractions of life isn't the best idea.

As I plan to use Zencart for other online installations, I am curious what the Manufacturers option is for?
I have searched and found no real explaination, - is it merely for subcatogorising products by?

You have tha ability to include a url to the manufacturer's site or a url to the item page on the manufacurer's site, include a mfg's logo among other things that can be of use to your customers if you deem them as beneficia;
