Easier way of upgrading?

The upgrade process for Zencart is far more complicated than other PHP apps it seems.

Is it possible to dump the database (maybe not from SQL but from a backup feature in Zencart, similar to Gallery?), install a fresh, up to date version and then restore the backup into that version?

I found the easiest way to upgrade was to install 1.3.7 in a new directory/location. create my new template, upload 1.3.7 with the custom template information to the live site, run zc_install to upgrade the database only. It worked like a charm. I took a site from 1.2.7 to 1.3.7 that way without a hitch.
