Newbie looking for information on downloadable products

Hi all,

Can anyone please point me to a tutorial about setting up a zen cart installation for selling dowloadable items? That's the only type on items I'll have to sell for creating my first zen cart store. I've searched the forums, but didn't found it.

Thanks in advance,

rjm

Re: Newbie looking for information on downloadable products

The best resource is now the new book (Check the banner at the top of the page), I also sell only downloadable goods and I struggled for a month or so getting it right, after reading the book, I realize, while may way may have kinda-sorta worked, the right way worked, every time and was bullet proof.

Check out the sit at http://www.rblibrary.com

Glad to help you, but you gotta let me know what you are getting stuck on.

Wmarcy: I've tried to buy it, but all I get is an empty page on Lulu.com, instead of the book; maybe it's not possible to buy it at Portugal (I'm in Portugal), I'm not sure. I would gladly buy it, if I could.
My first question would be: where do I put the downloadables, in which directory?

Re: Newbie looking for information on downloadable products

Sorry to jump in on this post, but thought it would be best to post here instead of starting a new thread.

I recently moved my domain to a new server. As the days go by, I find more and more that isnt working. Not major things, but a few things here and there.

I just found out today that my downloadable products are not downloading. When you click on the link to download, I am taken to a...

Not Found
The requested document was not found on this server.

Nothing has changed so I wasnt sure why it wouldnt work. So, I searched the forum and found that the permissions for pub and downloads should be 777. I made this change and still it thinks the file is not there. SO, I thought, maybe the files need to be in pub instead of downloads (doesnt make sense since it worked fine before, but at this point I am willing to try it) ;). I copied the PDF files to both pub and downloads and I still get the same message.

Does anyone have any idea why I would be getting this message? I am running php 5.0.4 with MySQL 4.1.2 and ZC 1.2.7. (we are in the midst of upgrading right now).

Any help is greatly apprecaited.

Re: Newbie looking for information on downloadable products

One thing I forgot to mention. Next to the filename in the attribute controller, there is a "green" round icon next to the file name. I believe this indicates it is a valid link. Am I correct?

Re: Newbie looking for information on downloadable products

Sorry, one more piece of information. I just deleted one of the configured downloadable products and went back in and added the file name and price information. This is the link the site takes me to. http://www.yourdomain.com/store/pub/.nmmvsmrenlsxsepzh/HHFinal.pdf

Does that look right? The .nmmvsmrenlsxsephzh seems odd. Hell, I dont remember it being out of pub either.

Re: Newbie looking for information on downloadable products

Hi Kim ! Fancy meeting you here ! L

When you entered the filename at the bottom of the attributes page, did you put the http:// in there ? I have worked for 3 days getting mine set up and finally got it. Here is how I did mine...

I put the download file in the /Downloads folder.

In the Admin I went to Configuration/Attributes and set the Download by Redirect to False. Be sure you have Downloads enabled too. Download by Streaming is false. Everything else I left at default.

Then I went to Catalog/Option Name Manager and created a new one called Download and set it to Radio.

Then go to Option Value, select Download in the dropdow box and gave it the option value of Download File.

Then when I added a product I chose that attribute for it in the Attributes and at the bottom where you enter the file name do not add the URL to the file. Just put the file name. For example

test.zip

Mine is finally working right, yehaw ! :)

Re: Newbie looking for information on downloadable products

Hey, thanks for the reply.

Well, your suggestion did it. All I did was change the Download by Redirect to False and EUREKA!!

Thanks for your help!

Re: Newbie looking for information on downloadable products

Hello all,

Can someone please write me a short tutorial what i need to edit to put the /download folder outside the webroot.

current situation :
/home/user/public_html/index.html
(current website)

/home/user/public_html/zencard/index.php
(i've put zencart in its own dir)

/home/user/public_html/zencard/download
(this is the standard place where download lives)

/home/user/download
(this is the secure place outside the webroot where i want to store my downloads)

What do i need to edit to make this work?

In the config i edited /download and changed it to ../../downloads but that gave me a RED HEADER with :

**Warning: The downloadable products directory does not exist: /home/user/public_html/zencart/../../download/. Downloadable products will not work until this directory is valid.

**What is the right way to do this?

Can someone please point me into the right direction?

B.
