'Who's Online' number increase

  1. Is there a way to manually input a starting number for users onine?

In other words, if the actual number of users online is 15...can I have it appear as 2015, etc.?

Re: 'Who's Online' number increase

<lol>, number inflation.

I would assume it was a pretty easy hack to make.

Re: 'Who's Online' number increase

Ha. Well, I figure at the early stage it is best to look like people are around the site.

Any ideas where to increase that number?

You are much better off just to turn the box off than to lie about how many people are online.

Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

Re: 'Who's Online' number increase

Yes, of course my feelings would be the same if those numbers appeared on the shopping cart. However, they will not.

If you have followed my postings you would also realize that I have two other sites created with zen which do not involve the shopping cart feature. These focus around public flows of information, in particular historical documents and web resources. It is my intention to create an atmosphere where users are not intimidated to submit resources, documents, sites etc. because they feel no one will see them.

However, that is exactly why I have the number of vistors showing. So these users realize people are visiting the site.....

Does that make sense to you now?

Re: 'Who's Online' number increase

Here are the non-shopping cart sites I refer to:

1) Online documents, articles and magazine: http://www.historicohio.org
2) Web, research and resource guide: http://www.historicalpreservation.org/webguide/

These are the sites where I want visitor numbers displayed.

You will also notice the shopping cart called "The History Store". This is a different circumstance. I will not display visitor numbers on that site.

hope that explains it

I no longer provide installation support on forum for all my modules. However, if there are real bugs with the modules please feel free to contact me

Re: 'Who's Online' number increase

A lot can change in a year and 9 months... Perhaps the OP was using Zen Cart for the info sites then. I notice the historicohio site still is not using a counter (inflated or not:).

E-commerce or not, directly lying about your visitor numbers doesn't seem right. That's a different matter from starting an id counter at a higher point.

I rather suspect that the clear ethical issue was the reason the question wasn't answered directly.

e-commerce more than any other branch of web design or retailing demands trust, and I doubt that that many of the people who have worked with Zen Cart for an extended period would be comfortable providing the information being requested.

Hi,
I'm aware of the ethical issues of doing such things as this but it is purely for knowledge purposes and not actual implementation.

How would you go about changing this?
Thanks

You would have to study the code: find out where that information is output to the screen, then find out where the template that does that output gets its data, then find out whether you need to look further at the database calls used to extract that data, and make whatever changes are appropriate for your needs.

Sorry, that's as specific as we can get when it comes to ethical matters. It's basically the same process you should use when it comes to customizing anything.
