Installing onto local machine - windows XP pro

Hello there I am a first time user and need to know if it is possible to run zencart on a standalone pc running xp pro to build & develop my site. I have followed the install instructions from the install.txt file and no matter what combination of folders I put in the browser will not open anything for me.
To be clear I am typing - http://localhost/zencart/zc_install - in my web browser address bar (running ie7). Prior to this I have uncompressed the zip file and extracted everything to c:\zencart on my hard drive.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Suggest you install xampp from
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/index.html

In your IIS settings make sure it is et to resolve index.php

In IIS go to your website
Right click and select properties
select the Documents tab
Select Add and add index.php
then move it up to the top of the list

This is not a default option and needs to be set.
Also make sure PHP is installed correctly - sometimes this can be nasty

Thanks guys this has helped, I am not yet unpacked but do detect some progress being made.

Anyway here goes....installed xampp smoothly enough, followed instructions again and this time I got a windows 'yellow' bar at the top of the browser window warning about intranet security. I went with this and fearlessly (or was it foolishly !?) proceeded. I have now got a window open showing ;

Object not found!

The requested URL was not found on this server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again.

You need to install the shopping cart into a sub-directory of htdocs in the Xampp folder.
C:\Program Files\xampp\htdocs\store
for example

Very simple tutorial... I managed to install with in 5 mins... well done

I had quite a few problems setting up as you may have seen from my other posts just below yours.

Any problems I did have I searched on the forum and generally found the answer I was looking for.

I highly recommend buying the zencart manual. I don't think I could have gotten far without this. You would probably fined it useful after installation as well as it goes through all the basic topics in detail.
