Where are the logfiles?

hi, new installation on Windows. Installed the demo store too, everything looks fine, can change various things through Admin panel. Trying to take payments through PayPal and have set up the various settings. However every time I try to make a CC payment I get the dreaded "There has been an error processing your credit card. Please try again." message. If instead I try to make a PayPal payment I just get returned to the payment page with no error messages!

So my question is, how do I generate some logging to tell me what is going wrong, and where are the logfiles.

thanks
russell

Re: Where are the logfiles?

Strictly speaking of the PayPal modules, you can enable debug logging by editing the Debug setting in the module itself in your Zen Cart admin area. Admin->Modules->Payment

When the PayPal modules create logs, they are stored in /includes/modules/payment/paypal/logs ... thus that folder needs to be writable by your webserver (same as your /cache and /images folder needed to be made writable during installation)

Speaking more generally:
What version of PHP are you running?
Which browser(s) are you testing with?
What are your settings in Admin->Configuration->Sessions?

Re: Where are the logfiles?

Thanks for taking time to reply DrByte!

In /includes/modules/payment/paypal/logs I just have the index.html page nothing else.

I believe that all folders are writeable by the web application (hosting is windows).

Zen Cart 1.3.7, PHP 4.3.2. I was testing with IE 7.

If you want to see the behaviour go to www.888bootcamp.com/catalogue. I just have the demo shop up for now. Even the Paypal pay without signing in feature just returns to the payment page. Weird!

Sessions:
Session Directory//nas33ent/domains/8/888bootcamp.com/user/htdocs/catalogue/cache
Cookie Domain True
Force Cookie Use False
Check SSL Session ID False
Check User Agent False
Check IP Address False
Prevent Spider Sessions True
Recreate Session False
IP to Host Conversion Status true

Thanks

Re: Where are the logfiles?

  1. Let's install the latest PayPal patch from this thread:
    http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56216

  2. You said you think all files are writable by the web application. I hope not. Most security settings do not (and should not) make more than just a couple select files/folders world-writable. You need to specifically set the permissions for your Internet Guest Account (IUSR_xxxxxx) to read+write. Perhaps your hosting company has an inteface to allow you to control that manually ... so that you can specifically set the /includes/modules/payment/paypal/logs folder to writable ?

  3. Try creating a test log file by enabling debug logging and then going to this URL:
    http://www.888bootcamp.com/catalogue/ipn_main_handler.php
Then check the logs folder ... you should see a new file added there.
If you've installed the latest patch file, it should have your IP address in the top of it.

  4. Then try testing PayPal transactions

Re: Where are the logfiles?

Thanks Dr Byte,

I installed the latest PayPal patches. It isn't possible to modify write permissions on individual folders (there is also "Private" folder that can't be read). The call to the IPN handler file produced nothing in the log folder...

My gut feeling is that this is nothing to do with PayPal but more the installation or configuration of Zen Cart in my hosting environment.

Thanks
Russell

Re: Where are the logfiles?

You could change the debug logging to email ... you'll get lots of them ... the drawback is that they don't arrive in the order in which they occur, and it's harder to piece them together in sequence if needed.

I tend to agree that this is a configuration issue more than a ZC or PP issue.
