Contact us and forgot password email not working

Customers are not getting there password email when they click on forgot password although it says that it sent it. Also when someone sends me email from the contact us section of the store, I do not receive it. BUT I can send email when I use tools>send email and that does work. What is goin on? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The weird thing is that even though a few customers are saying that they are not getting there forgot password email, it works for me when I use it on my "dummy" account.

Tell them to check their spam and junk filters and set them to let your email through.

It looks as though this was a lot my fault as it turned out to be my smtp password werent correct and the contact us i still cant figure out i must have had bad code in there because i took out all of the dropdown menu departments and left it empty, now it works fine! Thank you for youe replies.
