Adding Mercury

Thank you canopy, unfortunatly it was set correctly.
I have tried adding the accounts again but even though my password is set in mercury to password and all my settings at the end of adding an account read as yours do under the 'Congratulations' screenshot on page 45, I am receiving the same message that the mail server is saying 'username or password incorrect'. Can you think of anything else I can try or is there any more information you need from me?

One more thing...is WAMP a bad option for this. Not sure if it has Mercury as I am taking a class and I have to use this, well don't have to but its recommended
Please check the WAMP thread right on this forum.
You also might want to download the WAMP manual by Oxicottin in the Troubleshooting section.
There is no mail server bundled with WAMP, but they think it's a good thing, read their manual.
Tough getting everything to be compatible with officially supported versions of MySQL, PHP, but it works fine and it has a great interface.
Check out my recent struggle with the latest version of WAMP, you might want to use 1.7.0, the one immediately preceding it.

Thank you to the people who have given me help with this problem I have a solution so thought I'd post the solution in case it helps anyone else. To recap when asked for password after adding a new a/c in Thunderbird I got the message 'username or password incorrect'.

A friend with far more smarts than me looked at a number of reasons this may happen and found the reason for the problem and the solution:

My PC belives my port 110 to be being used by another server (to my knowledge it isn't so may be a glitch??). Anyway if you have the same problem and have tried everything else. Try:

-Going into mercury admin
-Select 'Configuration' from top menu
-Select 'Mercury POP3 service'
You will see listen on TCP port 110 change to:
-Listen on TCP port 1100 (i.e. add extra 0)

Now in Thunderbird add a/cs as per the manual.
-Cancel the password error
-You wil see the a/c name still appears in the left panel
-Right click on it
-select 'properties'
-then select 'server settings' under that new a/c name
-Also change that from port 110 to 1100
-uncheck ckeck for messages every 10 mins.
Now stop and restart mercury and thunderbird for the changes to take effect. click on an a/c in thunderbird you have added and when asked for the password fingers crossed it will work.

I hope I have explained this correctly, good luck.

If you want to know exactly which ports are in use in your system, type netstat at a command line.
If you follow that with "space"/? you will get all the available switches.

When you say 'at a command line' do you mean in the console window? So I would 'start', 'run' and then in the appearing window write your commands?

Not directly at "run", you need to type "cmd" in the "run" window.
In Windows 98 and earlier it is "command", but I assume that you are using 2K or later.
Start --> Run --> cmd, and then type netstat /? at the command prompt.
Once you know what the swtiches do, type for example:
netstat -ano
you can use shorthand for the switches, no need to type "-" every time.
Clear enough?
