Add Stock-By-Attributes without losing old information?

I've already entered about 150 products in my shopping cart but i need to have some products have multiple colors with different part numbers for each. After a lot of searching it seems the answer to that is stock-by-attributes, but do I need to do anything special so as not to lose the work I've already done?
