Performance issues with Zencart 1.3.7: 5500 categories and 360.000 products

Hello!

I am running a shop (testing) with Zencart 1.3.7. I should import here 5500 categories and 360.000 products.

I just imported only the categories but I am already experiencing SERIOUS performance problems. I am using a fresh install with no tweaking. You can try it for yourself:
http://test.bendoo.nl (select german language, then go to 1 of the 2 main categories and try to browse).

Are these problems to be expected when using these amount of categories and products?

What could be done to improve this?

Any suggestiones or similar experiencies???

There are several things you can do - #1 being - turn off the category counts in the Admin> Configuration> My store and make sure that gzip is enabled. Also- is this a dedicated server or shared hosting?

If you are running this slow with just categories and no products I would seriously start looking into a better hosting solution for your site ...

Thanks for your help...I turned off category counts and this helped already a LOT!!! Furthermore, it is indeed running on a shared server and will move to a dedicated server as soon as everything is working fine.

I addition to what I said above, I noticed that the back-end (admin-section) is still very SLOW although here I set also cat-counts=off.

Could there be another reason here?

1.Try optimising images.. index page.. at least 3 images over 20k in size..
2.Move to dedicated server asap.. otherwise going to be long process entering all those products on such a slow shared server..

Version 1.4.0 (currently in development and not ready for general use) has a large number of changes in it to make database querying much more efficient and therefore much much faster especially on large databases. While it won't be out for several months yet, it's something to look forward to ...

You can calculate metrics however you wish. Here's an example to whet your appetite: Preliminary tests on a home page with demo products takes queries down from 800 to 200.

This is not the place to open a discussion of v1.4.
I only mention it to show you that we've already been working on known bottlenecks.
