Thanks for the replies.
Here's one. Under Layout Boxes controller, I have tell a friend turn off:
sideboxes/tell_a_friend.php OFF RIGHT 65 0 OFFAnd for that matter, write a review:
sideboxes/reviews.php OFF LEFT 40 0 OFF
Despite it all, they appear in the centre of this page:

What gives?

Those buttons are not controlled by the *sidebox" controller. Open your Admin> Catalog> Product Types> Product General> Edit Layout
