How can I show all products at each category level?

I know this may not seem logical, but when I select a top level category I would like all of the products in the subcategories (for that top level category) to show so that a customer can browse a broader selection or choose a subcategory if they want to narrow the selection.

Does this make sense?

I am trying to do the same thing, and have not had any luck so far.

I have a customer who has a very short list of products in 3 different categories. I am trying to make a product listing page that shows all of the products on one page.

Here is what I am trying to do:

For a temporary fix, I created the index by hand, but if the customer wants to add more products, obviously the list will need to be updated. This is not ok for a customer that knows nothing about html code.

Since I am not really using the product_listing module, I thought there would be a way to modify it to strip away the image, price, etc.. and only display the product name. But this would only work for one category at a time.

Any ideas on how to get this to work for all 3 categories at the same time?

I just found a sidebox that will do what you want.

I was able to modify the code to add table tags and format it to fit my needs.

I had to do some extensive mods to make this fit. I do not use a right column on this site, so I was able to enable the expanded categories sidebox on the right column and fit it into the main content area. It may take some time to organize it, but I can probably outline exacty what I did if anyone is interested.
