Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

Hi Everyone,

I've set up my custom template folders (my_template) where a Classic folder is located. Then placed copies of the files I needed to edit into my_template folder. But none of my changes are appearing (I've edited the header image, and tried to get rid of the "Congratulations! you have successfully installed...etc.").

I don't understand what step I've missed, or what I have done wrong. Any help is always appreciated!

Sandy

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

I've looked in Admin>Tools>Template Selection, but the only template that shows up is the Classic. I'm not sure which URL you want - the one to my Admin Home page? Thanks for your help.

but the only template that shows up is the Classic.
You need to edit the template_info.php file that you copied to "my_template" and name it as the folders that you have created. It should then show up as a selection in the admin.

Select it and then admin > tools > layoutboxes controller > reset > and adjust sideboxes as you want

URL to your store

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

Ok, I've renamed the template in the template_info.php file to "my_template". I then selected it as the template layout in Admin>Tools. And I reset the Layout Box Controller. But when I viewed my online store, it does not look anything like the Classic template did (colors, text, everything is really ugly).

My store url is: http://s14.securedview.com/srscustomprinting.com/index.php?

I thought the Classic "look" would still remain, with only the small changes I made taking effect. Is this not true?

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

that is the 'default' template showing, the template that you saw before was the 'classic' template. ain't it purty? afaik it looks that way to make it easier to see where a color is coming from in the css file.
if you copy over the css and images folder from classic to your new template directory, it should look like it did before.

Lazy and willing to work very hard to stay that way

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

Ah, I see! I believe I've copied all the files necessary for the Classic template to show again. And I was successful in adding my logo - unfortunately the logo is repeating across the page. How do I stop that?

And the pages I edited for "Shipping & Returns", "Privacy Notice", etc. have reverted back to the original text. How do I get my changes back for those pages? Here's my url of how my shop currently looks (it's looking much better! :thumbsup: )

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

I posted the above question about the repeating logo, and then figured out how to fix it! :smartass:

But my next question is: there is a broken image "X" in the upper left hand corner of my shop, with a clickable link that says "SRS Custom Printing". It is overlapping my logo. How do I get rid of this?

Thanks!

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

This "X" is because the image that you have is srs_header_v6.jpg, and there apparently is no logo.gif image to display. Either slice your head image and make the logo part a logo.gif file (easiest) or a logo.jpg file (need to edit the call for the gif to be jpg) and place the created logo.gif in your template/images folder.

Alternatively you can edit the call for logo.gif - and aas my failing memory recalls this is in the includes/language/english/header.php file and will be 'logo.gif' and you can reduce this to just the pair of singly quotes thusly - ''

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

Thanks Kobra. I put up a new header image without the logo no problem. Then created srs_header_logo.gif and placed the reference to it in includes>templates>my_templates>template_info_php (see below):

$template_description = 'This template set is designed to be easily modified using only the style sheet to change colors, fonts, and the store logo. Three images are required; srs_header_logo.gif, srs_header_v6.jpg, and tile_back.gif.';
$template_screenshot = 'scr_template_default.jpg';
?>

But I still see the "X" and clickable link but no logo. Am I missing a reference to the header logo in another file?

hen created srs_header_logo.gif and placed the reference to it in includes>templates>my_templates>template_info_php (see below):
As long as the image is actually encoded as a gif... the above reference is not actually code but only informational....

Rename your image to be logo.gif, as the easiest solution

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

I'm sorry Kobra, but it still isn't working. I've renamed the image to logo.gif, and changed the name in the header.php file. I'm trying to keep all the files straight, but I fear I'm missing a file somewhere. Is there another file other than header.php that I need to edit?

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

This is what it is looking for
http://s14.securedview.com/srscustomprinting.com/includes/templates/template_default/images/final_srs13300.jpg

So When you say you edited header.php and changed the name but then state that I've renamed the image to logo.gif...

First no edit to any file is necessary if the file is a gif and named logo.gif you still have it looking for final_srs13300.jpg - this is a jpg and you can not just rename a jpg to gif but must conver the image into a gif image

Post what you changed in the header.php file a from - to would assist.

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

But there is no image final_srs13300.jpg in the directory below:
includes/templates/template_default/images/final_srs13300.jpg

I created the srs_header_logo.gif image in Adobe, and then renamed it to logo.gif using the Sashbox file manager. Do I need to upload the changed image again?

Here is the unchanged header.php file:
// added defines for header alt and text
define('HEADER_ALT_TEXT', ' [home link]');
define('HEADER_SALES_TEXT', '<h1></h1>');
define('HEADER_LOGO_WIDTH', '200px');
define('HEADER_LOGO_HEIGHT', '70px');
define('HEADER_LOGO_IMAGE', 'logo.gif');

Here is the changed header.php file:
// added defines for header alt and text
define('HEADER_ALT_TEXT', 'SRS Custom Printing');
define('HEADER_LOGO_WIDTH', '205px');
define('HEADER_LOGO_HEIGHT', '133px');
define('HEADER_LOGO_IMAGE', 'logo.gif');

I really only changed the header_alt_txt, changed the logo width & height, and then because I had previously changed the header_logo_image name to srs_header_logo.gif, I changed it back to just logo.gif.

I've gone through and deleted any of the previous logo/header images (ie, final_srs1330.jpg). At this point, I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. :down:

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

So are all these changes being saved to files located in includes/templates/my_templates/ - - ??
Is your new logo.gif in includes/templates/my_templates/images/ - ??
The edited header.php in includes/templates/my_templates/common/ - ??
and any other edited files in their comparable folders in your template area??

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

I just thought of something that might be affecting the header and logo. When you said to remove the logo from my header, and then save just the logo as a .gif, all I did was cut the logo from the header image - I didn't make the image shorter, so that it would fit next to the logo. I assumed the logo.gif image would overlap the header.jpg image. Does this affect anything?

I very much appreciate all the time and effort you are spending on this with me. Thank you again.

Re: Template Override System - I'm apparently not getting it...

Yes this might have an adverse affect but it should be showing....

The resulting image should be just the width of the image itself. the other can be left the same as it in the background and the logo.gif is placed over it.

Answers to the questions are below after the ??:

kobra:

So are all these changes being saved to files located in includes/templates/my_templates/ - - ?? YES

Is your new logo.gif in includes/templates/my_templates/images/ - ?? YES

The edited header.php in includes/templates/my_templates/common/ - ?? NO, didn't know about this one. Should I put a copy of my edited header.php file here?

and any other edited files in their comparable folders in your template area??

kobra:

I thought the logo.gif should just overlap, but thought I'd throw that out there just in case...

The title of this thread is "Using the Override System" and this is what it is all about - any file that exists under/in a folder where there is a classic folder can be in an override folder named for the template that it is being applied to.

Answer is yes - place this edited file in your template area in the proper folder or my_template/common for the header.php file

I thought the logo.gif should just overlap,
The logo actually consumes space unlike a background image that is by definition in the background - the logo will float over the background.
