Category Partition

How can I SHOW category like this?
I do not want to have sub-category and subsub category, etc..
I just want to make Partition in the category navigation so that it's easier for customer to see.

Categories
Mens <---------

  • T-shirt
  • Socks
  • Shoes
    Womens<------
  • T-shirt
  • Socks
  • Shoes
    Kids<-----------
  • T-shirt
  • Socks
  • Shoes

like this:
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/index.ognc?CategoryID=118&cm_re=37.x.7-_-HOMEPAGE_INCLUDE_1&LinkType=Homepage-_-CATEGORY%20--%205125%20--%20118:women&PageID=118*1*24*-1*-1

Thank you very much for your time.

Re: Category Partition

You'll notice that Macys doesn't actually do what you have described. For example, the category "shoes" appears only once in Macy's list. There are no repeated categories. For good reason. So your example list above, with the T-shirts, Socks and Shoes repeated under each heading won't work.

But in a general sense I can see where it would be handy to be able to add arbitrary text into the category list as section titles.

I'm not an expert in this, so I'm just thinking out loud, but here goes...

  1. Name your categories uniquely. So you'd have to use Men's Shoes, Kids Shoes, and so on.

  2. Add extra category boxes, one each for Mens, Womens and Kids. (I can't remember if you can do that in Zen as it is, or you have to add a mod to do it.)

  3. Style your category boxes and their backgrounds so they look like all one space with the category box headings looking like section titles, just as on the Macys site.

The above is a bit vague because I've haven't done this myself. But I believe it could be done.

Hope this gets you going in the right direction.

Re: Category Partition

This is thoroughly practical.

  1. As Rob says.
  2. You can make categories with the header names you want and leave them empty.
  3. In tpl_categories.php, there is a comment section describing how to give separate styling for specific categories. Follow the directions there, and style the tags in your stylesheet.

This will allow the header cat names to be clicked on and will show as empty. If this is a problem, this thread discusses adding a divider in a specific place in the cat menu. The logic could be extended to insert some text into that line.
Something like ```php
//add heading above a group of cats - gjh42 20070408
if ($box_categories_array[$i]['path'] == 'cPath=81') {
$content .= '<span class="headTest">Heading</span><br />' . "\n";
}

and in your stylesheet add ```php
.headTest {
    color: #998811;
    background-color: #ff33ff;
    }
```I found that width: had no effect here.
You will get a non-linked heading with whatever styling you specify, though it will be only as wide as the text, not full width of the menu. (You could "cheat" and make the text say "Heading          .", tweaked to fit the width of your sideboxes...)
