Different product listing setup for different category

Ok, hopefully I'm posting in the right place and this makes sense...

Is it possible to have a different product listing set up for different categories?

Basically some of the products I've got on my shop are 0.1 increment items, whereas others are specific items (eg. power tools). For the first I don't wish to display images in the product listing in part due to being lots of the same type. The second however I'd prefer to be able to have images shown (perhaps in column view using mod) as I'm told customers are more likely to use the image to find the product they want.

You can make one class of product a different Product Type, and then define the display for this new type.
Standard products use #productGeneral, and you could have #productSmallParts as well.

Look in admin > Catalog > Product Types and create a new type.

to use your analogy, you could have a drill bits product with the different sizes in an drop down menu to pick the exact one you need.

By 0.1 increments I mean drill bits such as...
0.4mm Jobber Drill £xx.xx
0.5mm Jobber Drill £yy.yy
0.6mm Jobber Drill £zz.zz
...the problem being that these increment sizes have different part/model numbers and prices. At the moment I've put each type of drill into a separate sub-category. With so many of these drills it seemed little point taking up space to show a picture in the product listing of the same drill, as there is a larger version in that subcategory of it.

As far as I could see the 'product types' option only allowed for the product page to be modified rather than the product listings page. I'm not too sure how attributes work, and whether they would allow for different model number and prices.
