reseting the main page product catagory thumbnails?

Had a question for you guys

I just installed my cart and things are up and running but i had a problem

I noticed my thumbnails on my main page are a straight line going down.

Is there any way i can make a few columns going across to eliminate scrolling down?

Im trying to get it to arrange like this

It doesn't need the extra sub category's. im just trying to get the columns back

ok i was just tinkering around with the Admin-Comfig-Maximum Values-Categories To List Per Row---option

It is working but i cant get the products to show up in the second Column?

Any Ideas

Try configuration->index listing. Edit the columns per row for each type (featured, new, etc) to what you want.

it worked for the other stuff just not the main page

Does anyone know the main files that i have to edit to make my own layout?

ok i installed the layout grid mod

Set it up and thats not even working.

Before i give up im going to ask one last question. sorry but I have been trying to figure this out for 3 days. Its getting a little nerving.

Would the sort order on the category's have anything to do with my problem?
