Giving free product for signup. Product is 1.37 and I am giving Free Shipping (through the Shipping Module NOT via the discount coupon as I am aware you can't offer a percent off AND free shipping).

See below. Says I owe the customer .01 ... I am in Ohio and my tax is set correctly to 7.5%

Help!

$1.37 $1.37
Sub-Total:

  $0.00
 Free Shipping Options (Free Shipping):

  -$1.37
 Discount Coupon: welcome777 :

  Total = $-0.01

Re: Discount Coupon/Free - Tax Bug?

I did not ever get this resolved, however, my workaround is to use a gift certificate instead of a discount coupon. If anyone ever comes up with a fix on this it would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

BTW - finally live again! Thanks to all of you who helped through the crisis!

Re: Discount Coupon/Free - Tax Bug?

1 x <item> = $39.95
1 x <item> = $20.00
1 x <item> = $40.00
1 x <item> = $20.00
1 x <item> = $25.00

Sub-Total: $144.95
United States Postal Service (Priority Mail): $9.45
Discount Coupon: XXXXX: -$150.00
Total: $-40.94

Ok, I just had this situation this morning. Newest version of zen-cart. First time ever. I also suspect it has to do with the tax as I can only recreate this issue if I set my state to a 'taxable' one. As you can see, the cusomer should owe me anyway, and though she is in a taxable state, tax didn't even compute.

I appreciate your workaround listed above and I may give GC while I sort it out, but if someone knows where I can look to fix this please give us some ideas.

Thanks for any wisdom you can wing my way!!

Re: Discount Coupon/Free - Tax Bug?

Ok, I have run a billion-n-one test transactions, with every setting toggled :frusty: . Here is what seemed to make a difference and make it all add up...

In Admin >modules >order total >discount coupon >edit
I changed the:

Re-calculate Tax
Standard

toggle to:

Re-calculate Tax
Credit Note

and selected the 'taxable goods' under tax class. Can it be that it was that easy? Well, a billion toggles into it easy was not on my mind, but... give it a try, see if that helps others in the same predicament.

Oh, and it seems it was not even showing tax since there was a negative amount shown before  -- if I add more items to my cart it shows. It apparently IS in the tax configuration, just not what I first thought...

Let me know if there is some reason that should not fix it or if there is something I have missed in my tally.

Re: Discount Coupon/Free - Tax Bug?

Hi redheads,

By coincidence I was just this evening setting up a discount coupon for the first time. I followed along with the instructions in The Book, but he emphasizes the wrong thing -- at least for my setup. When I did it the way he said to I got incorrect calculations, but when I set it up the way you finally did, it worked fine.

So, for others out there who may be confused... If you charge tax and want the coupon value removed before the tax is calculated, set the coupon up as shown above -- that is Credit Note, and choose a tax class. That seems to do it, though I'm sure there are situations where you'll need to fiddle a bit.

Re: Discount Coupon/Free - Tax Bug?

LOL - Reading this I am actually glad you did not say the answer to this problem was in The Book, since I have a copy sitting here which I did not look in to figure this out -- too funny. I have always read the forums of course... I will remember to look there next time... just in case :-)

Thanks for the verification. I do not know of this happening in my previous cart versions, but cannot swear to it. We have so many international customers and so few coupons given out that I cannot swear we have had a 'taxed' person get a coupon over and above the cost of the order items before. Too tired of looking at it to go find out right this second - LOL..

Thanks again to everyone who make these forums work. Oh, and there is a book out now, too - don't forget to look there ;-)

Re: Discount Coupon/Free - Tax Bug?

On sober second thought, you may wish to check out my suggestion with your local tax grabbers, who, being the sort they are, may wish to tax the whole amount before you take off the coupon value.

I'm going to leave my setup as is, and if apprehended will simply fall face down, weaping inconsolably, gnashing my teeth and rending my garments, saying "I didn't know! I didn't know!"

Re: Discount Coupon/Free - Tax Bug?

This solved my HST problem, thanks alot, but I don't understand why it fixed it. What does changing it to "credit note" do? It doesn't make sense to me cause before it seemed to have picked an amount out of the blue (in my case around 9.5% instead of 14%). I guess it really doesn't matter so long as it works, but I was just curious. HST is a rip off anyways!

Thanks, Colleen

Thanks for this great thread. It's been most helpful. How do I set this up so that it does calculate tax on the whole amount, then activate the discount? If it's written above already, I guess I missed it... thanks for your help.

Re: Discount Coupon/Free - Tax Bug?

This doesn't appear to work with the local tax module. If I set the coupon as described, it still charges local tax. I tried changing the sort order of the local tax module (default 250) to just before & after the normal tax module (tried 301 & 299), but that causes the total to not include the discount.

Ideas?

Last time I tried the local tax module it charges tax on everything - even non-taxable items. I think the problem is not in the discount coupon...

Please accept my question as genuine... where did you get the $6.03?
I have tried to tax the sub-total, the total, and even looked at subtracting the discount coupon, but I still cannot get $6.03.

Respectfully,

Re: Discount Coupon/Free - Tax Bug?

$81.96 - $16.39 + $7.35 = $72.92 * 8.25 = $6.02
