subcategory prefix

I'm looking for a way to modify the text before each subcategory in the expanded subcategory listing in the sidebox. Currently it has a "|_" (vertical line and underscore) before each subcategory, and I'm desperate to save a character or two to avoid shortening some of my subcategory names. I wasn't able to find those two characters together when doing the all files search in the admin panel.

On the same subject, I'm also trying to make the subcategories display all of the time and not just when the parent category is selected, but there's another thread open on it.

the "|_" is in the admin > config > layout settings > Categories Separator between the Category Name and Sub Categories > set to what you want

HINT:: Always look to the admin first before the files - someone is switch happy and has provided one for most of the easier most wanted things

As far as making them top-level categories, that wouldn't work because some categories have subcategories with the same name, and with them all as top level categories the category names would be too long to fit without wrapping.
