My www broke but my http:// works fine.

Customers searching google are finding this url
https://www.birdoasis.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=30
but that url brings them to a page not found error.

If you go to this url, the page comes up fine.
http://birdoasis.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=30

Funny thing is I used to know the answer to this problem, but my brain is fried from the checkout mess this morning. Any idea why www isn't working?

Thank you.

Re: My www broke but my http:// works fine.

What do your configure files say?

Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

Re: My www broke but my http:// works fine.

It worked for me today as well. But it seems sporadic. I noticed this about a month ago but then it was working again so I thought it was just too much coffee. haha

Both configure files have http://birdoasis.com as the site server and the catalog both for http and https. if I add www the site forgets where the css files are.

So is there a way to add the www and have the links and css work all the time.

Re: My www broke but my http:// works fine.

The www address also worked fine for me. Broadly speaking you need the webserver set up with either https://www.mydomain.com or mydomain.com with the other declared as a Server Alias. I normally have the www as the 'primary' and as the 'site of record' in the configure.php files, but I don't know how standard that is.
Equally you need DNS A records for both the www and domain addresses in order for people to be able to use either in their browser.

Re: My www broke but my http:// works fine.

Hey John,

Sounds like a server setup issue. I really hate this www. or not-www. thing. But, the gen public thinks that everything has to have a www. in front. "Go to https://www.yadayada-yada.com, all lower case". Aaaargh.

Haveing said that, I try to set all my customers' sites up with www. default in the store configs. Then I put a redirect in the .htaccess file on their site to change all instances of non-www. to www. . So, anyone can use the url with or without and all ends up as with.

So, maybe, you could post the .htaccess file?

But, this may be a deeper server issue as well.

Re: My www broke but my http:// works fine.

I normally see this happen when there is a domain related issue. Like the name servers aren't fully transfered.

sometimes in windows goto start-> run-> ipconfig /flushdns

This helps sometimes. Most cases your the only one that has the problem other people can see the site both ways. It's weird I have it happen sometimes when I transfer a domain.

Re: My www broke but my http:// works fine.

John,

Have you changed the DNS's recently? If those haven't been changed in the last 72 hours, that could be the problem. But, I assumed that this domain was propagated for quite a while.

Another problem comes up if you or your ISP are using proxie servers. These may not re-cache quickly enough for new or updated pages. This happens with customers I have on BTInternet ISP's, etc.

However, I do like shackle's idea of blaming it on MS. :) Billie and I don't get along anymore.

Re: My www broke but my http:// works fine.

I recently moved to a hosting account off of my resellers account because I had problems with the dns settings. But the hosting account should already be fine.

I posted a trouble ticket with my host, so hopefully they'll check out their dns settings.

Someone mentioned alias, I can set an alias in cpanel, I think I'll do that just to be sure.

Here's my .htaccess file.

<Files 403.shtml>
order allow,deny
allow from all
</Files>

deny from 68.83.102.222
deny from 38.98.120.70
php_flag session.use_trans_sid off

The two ip numbers that are denied were using up allot of bandwidth. Not sure what the heck they were doing but the first one used almost a meg. They don't pertain to my isp so I know it wasn't me. ha.

Re: My www broke but my http:// works fine.

Ok, well. Don't see anything there that would cause a problem.

This is the code I use to do the www dance. Might help the situation. But, not sure what's causing it in the first place, sooooo.....

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} .
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.mydomain\.com [NC]
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.mydomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Re: My www broke but my http:// works fine.

I am using Ultimate SEO's mod and cannot get that rewrite to work with the Ultimate mod rewrite. Is there a problem with that, or is my host causing this or some other setting I am not aware of?
