GV / Gift Certificate not working with my gateway

we've a custom gateway installed - realex.
The GV is not working with it. it just comes back with the error

Invalid Gift Certificate Redemption Code

it works fine with cheque/money order, where should I be looking to fix this!?

Hi,

Added to the above - we cant get gift vouchers to work with PayPal IPN either - has anybody solved this?
We have installed the latest patch for PayPal but still no luck!
