Shipping rates on a per item basis

We have items in our store that are 3oz and items that are 20,800 lbs

I need to be able to set the shipping type on a per item basis.

SKU123 weight 3oz
[x] FedEx
[x] UPS
[x] Store Pickup
[ ] Estimate Truck Freight (we call the customer with the freight cost)

SKU321 weight 20,800 lbs
[ ] FedEx
[ ] UPS
[x] Store Pickup
[x] Estimate Truck Freight (we call the customer with the freight cost)

So on and so forth.

THANKS

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

You could control the $this->enabled in each module based on the weight to turn them on and off ...

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

Wouldn't it be easier to setup up these items as a product type that required truck shipping and use a different handler page?

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

Not really ...

You would have to create a whole file set for the product type where on weight you can just test if the weight is >= 20800 to manage the shipping modules ...

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

Basing strictly on weight still doesn't quite work but I see your point.

We sell youth chairs in KD and assembled 2 packs.

Shipping for a single pack KD is not bad, and goes UPS very often, however, the 2 pack assembled cost more to ship than the value of the chairs! This is because it is like over-sized 2 and underweight...

On the other hand, we cannot ship hazardous items via UPS no matter what the weight (company is too lazy to do MSDN sheets for all these)

AND

We do not ship glass via UPS either. (Well, special requests require a repacking charge and disclaimer against breakage. But this is the exception not the rule) A box of tumblers is not heavy enough to base this on weight either, or even 10 boxes. But these would ship via truck reguardless.

Linda, perhaps a little direction on what is involved in making a mod for this would help me greatly. I am capable coder, but time is currently a huge constraint for me.... but a better understanding of what it would take to be able to select "Truck/Freight - call for quote" or force it if an item is freight only is what I think we need.

Looking forward to your imput!

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

Where you have such a distinction of using the heavy weight where it cannot possibly equal a regular order, just that in itself is a flag ...

For your scenario if you cannot use either the master_categories_id or the products_weight or some other identifier then you may need to either add a new flag to the products table for these or you can take the time to build a new product type ...

If you cannot use an existing field in the products table as the identifier, then you could use a new field as the flag with without a new product type in the products table but you would be editing the core files and need to update them with each upgrade ...

Then, you can test for how many products in the shopping cart has this field and if greater than 1 decide what to do as far as the whole order is concerned on the shipping ...

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

John,

Still poking at this issue and have what appears to be a partial solution.

Have you looked at the RFQ Shipping & Payment Modules? This may be just what you need.

http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&products_id=480

I also installed the Super Orders 2.0 ... which lets me enter the amount for shipping and update the order.

This is not automatic. A user would have to select RFQ. But you may be able to force this option based on weight per Ajah's point above.

For me, I think I must have another field in the products database, something like "Freight Only Shipping" as we do not ship glass, chemical or fuel vis UPS no matter what the weight.

I wonder if any of this is planned for ZenCart 2.0 next year?

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

THANKS - I am looking at the Shipping RFQ module now. My boss wants more....

We have a site on Monster Commerce that has weight limits set up in EACH shipping module so that UPS will only ship packages up to 70#, the same for FedEx and USPS.

Two ways to key a freight module would be
A Freight Module set up to allow shipments > 120#
or
A check box on each item that would only allow Freight Only Shipment

Even if we only had the RFQ module automatic for now would be cool!

On another note::: The UPS rep was here today and they are now offering UPS FREIGHT and supposedly have an xml API available, I will have more info soon. The FedEx Freight guy said He has an xml quote ability.

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

cj

I see that in Your case and in a situation that I am working on for www.stuff4toys.com that a [X] Hazardous Materials checkbox could be a real asset.

So Now I see an need for:
[ ] FedEx
[ ] UPS
[X] Store Pickup
[ ] (more boxes for all the other shipping module options)
[X] Estimate Truck Freight (we call the customer with the freight cost)
[X] Hazardous Materials
[X] Oversized Packaging
[ ] Available for Free Shipping - with qualification (as opposed to - o Free Shipping meaning always Free Shipping)
[ ] NOT Available for Free Shipping

probably allot more

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

hmmm... okay, here's an idea...

Set up your FedEx and UPS to quote to a max weight limit as you did in MonsterCommerce, if over the limit, either not offer or >grey< them out... But, you also offer RFQ, that way a customer can always request a freight quote, (even if under your 70 pound limit). You might even be able to set it up to use "free freight" for orders over $x,xxx...

The above sounds like a "simple" php edit.... per what Ajah referred to above. I haven't looked at the code yet.

Other situations like mine with Glass and Hazardous are still sounding like we need an additional field in the product database that I can test against since weight isn't a factor... Even if something as simple as "freight only" is added to the database. This is something in my opinion that we really need.

I have seen MANY posts over the last 2 years or so asking for some sort of way to specify freight/truck shipping.... and most of those have gone unanswered. Shipping modules are so important that I would think the zencart team would put more attention to it.

I have three large projects coming up and two are "must have freight" ... because of this I have been forced to look at perhaps using a paid cart like ProductCart which appears to have a full featured shipping and payment modules...

<sigh> No easy solutions!

Let me know how the UPS Freight and FedEX freight goes! When is this going to be offered?

-cj

p.s. the RFQ module came from OScommerce!

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

I am NOT a programmer so counting on me to create this is futile. I do know what I need and want, just don't know how to go about getting it done.

could it key from text in the Product Description?

Product is nice... yada yada ... Must Ship via Truck Freight Line as Hazardous Material ... yada yada Oversize Packaging ... yada yada

I agree: YES I would hope that the Dev Team would consider this as a viable project.

Re: Shipping rates on a per item basis

LOL! Almost got run over by a FedEx Freight truck whilst leaving work yesterday. Hmm.... are they trying to tell us something?

Anyway, here is something cool I just found that will help:
http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57924

It is a brief description on how to add a field to the products database :)

Your idea is also viable, but would require probably just as much coding (or more) to add that... and you would be dependent on someone not mispelling (!) something.

Do you know if the API is up for UPS and FedEx Freight?

They didn't call it an "API" both companies say that their current "Freight" rate quote returns an XML feed with the rate. I have contact info for FedEx and a PDF file from the UPS guy with their DevGuide.

PM me and I will forward the info to you.

Thanks
