my 404 page does not show up

i modified the 404 error page from the define pages editor but i get a totally different one when i type an erroneous address in my browser. What do you suggest i check? is it the .htaccess file ? i looked in my root directory but there was no .htaccess file. I wonder if it is hidden?

sorted it out, had to create .htaccess with this code:

ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?main_page=error404

<br>then upload it to my stores root directory, then change permissions to 644</br>
