How do I do away with the traditional sideboxes

I want my sidebox area on the left side of the page to look like this page:

http://ebed.com/category.php?ver=0&id=1

See how there is no category box? just links where the sidebox would go. I want to place an image there as a background, and have my category links be superimposed onto that image. I want to be able to place ALL of my links in that section, including information, ezpages, etc. I MAY want to place a different image below it for the pages other than product categories.. What kind of dance do I need to do to accomplish it? Thanks in advance folks!

Change the left sideboxes to use the template the header search uses - it is a "no box" template.

The easiest way to do it is to create an override of the YOUR_TEMPLATE/common/tpl_box_left_default.php using the code from tpl_box_header.php

Ok I have located the file tpl_box_header.php, but i cannot understand what to do with it. Here are its contents:

Anyone? I have no clue how to accomplish this, any ideas would be appreciated. I have searched high and low but i do not see anything which tells how to do it...

<?php echo $content; ?>

This outputs the value of $content without surrounding it with a box (as I presume tpl_box_left_default.php does).

ah, it begins to make sense. thanks..
