New products and Bestsellers

Is it possible to specify/hardcode products that will be displayed in the New products and Bestseller products sections of the main page?

Yes...
If the new products in the center on the main page place your hard links in tpl_modules_whats_new.php

And for the sidebox best sellers it is tpl_best_sellers.php

Of course a copy placed in your template folder structure
