PAYPAL IPN or PAYPAL EXPRESS... Is it one or the other?

Hey,

I'm not sure if I'm following this right but am I to understand that I should only set-up one of these features? I would like people to be able to shop with either their Paypal account or just with a credit card (with no paypal account). Right now, in my admin area both PP API and PP Express are green lighted but they both say 'processing..' When I do a test run, the option to just purchase with a credit card and without a PP account isn't showing up. It ask that I create a PP account.

So is it a conflict because both payment methods are optioned?

STF the reason you dont see the cc option, is because paypal has set a cookie on your machine, it knows you have an account.
try using a different browser, if that dosnt work, reboot the machine
or clear cookies from your browser

then try it

Hey... Thanks for the replies.

I have a business account and I'm using the Standard payment version. I didn't want the credit card charges to be on my site just yet...

Hi Merlin,

I pretty sure that's not it because my browser clears its cache and cookies everytime I close it.

Re: PAYPAL IPN or PAYPAL EXPRESS... Is it one or the other?

If you want people to pay by credit card whether or not they have a PayPal account, you should just set up the PayPal IPN. When your buyers go to checkout, they will be sent to PayPal and if they have an account, they can use it or they can pay with a credit card without an account. Both of them will occur on PayPal's site. You can also set up the Express Checkout for your buyers who have a PayPal account at the same time, but you will need to create API Credentials. The one you will use is the API Signature.

The "processing" status in the modules is set in the configuration where it says "Set Order Status".

Re: PAYPAL IPN or PAYPAL EXPRESS... Is it one or the other?

Ok i have created the express paypal payment thingy

1.what is the difference between this and the IPN payment?

  1. in the express i have created the credential and set up via signture etc...but when customers try to make a payment via express they get the following error:

Unable to process payment. Please contact the merchant as the postal address provided by the merchant is invalid, and the merchant has requested that your order must be delivered to that address.

What am i doing wrong?

Are you using fake addresses for testing? Or real addresses entered by customers?
What are the details of an address that's failing ?

Did you install the latest PayPal Patch ? A number of improvements in address-handling have been made since the original v1.3.7 release.

Re: PAYPAL IPN or PAYPAL EXPRESS... Is it one or the other?

Hello,

Okay, well here's my update. So far, I seem to have everything working. I did a test order and everything went through and billed appropriately. I have both the PAYPAL IPN & PAYPAL EXPRESS CHECKOUT modules active. Between a couple of calls to Paypal and some of the advice given in this thread, we managed to work it out.

One, I applied for the PAYPAL API SIGNATURE through my Paypal business account profile. That was fairly easy and took very little time to do. Just follow the instructions that are in the admin>shipping area and do what it says to do with the credentials. Plus, follow the instructions given here by the Dr. on how to set up the PDT. That was actually also simple. All of this was simple to do once everything started to make sense.

I discovered that the main reason I was having problems with the billing was because my Credit Card module was turned on and was set to a lower Sort Order number so it was coming up as first choice for payment and actively overriding my Paypal Options. Since I didn't apply for the Paypal Payment Pro the Credit Card function would not work on the site... I was under the belief that having it on allowed for the Paypal function to work --- I was wrong and it did the exact opposite. Once I turned it off and installed the Paypal Express Checkout patch, it would beautifully...

Hopefully this helps and thanks to all who offered their assistance...
Cheers
