zen cart book page 42 + configuring e mail client

ZEN CART BOOK PAGE 42 Configuring your e mail client.

i have followed the instructions and installed thunderbird and have created the e mail accounts.

the problem arises when i have tried sending e mails to each other. i get the following 'send message error'

"the message could not be sent because connecting SMTP server localhost failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator."

has anyone had the same problem? does anyone know what can be done to resolve it.

try using sendmail

Pls visit the Book Support Site and check through the Errata and Gotcha pages by clicking the corresponding hyperlinks in the side-box. That usually solves most of the problems u might face with a local setup.

Do remember to manually write down the updates onto your book so you won't forget next time as well :smile:.

If that still does not help, go to the Contact Us page and send me an email with a description of your problem so I can take a closer look at it.

i am using windows vista, which has caused its own problems. i would recommend that anyone on vista saves xammp to their C drive and not the default programs directory.

having never used mozilla thunderbird e mail before, my experience is based solely on the latest version (2.0.0.4) so what i'm about to say may or may not be relevant, but it took me 3 days before the penny finally dropped!

on page 44 of the book it mentions entering an e mail account for the outgoing user.
the screens don't readily lead you to to this field. and when the whole operation is completed the final screen looks exactly as the books copy on page 45. so I had no idea why it would not work.

what you then need to do is go into view settings for this account and double click on "outgoing server"

you then need to edit the top field and enter mail.example.com

after this is saved everything works.

i hope this helps anyone else who gets stuck on this part.

hmmm... I'm having the same issue, however "localhost" or "mail.example.com" are not working for me :(

The message I am getting is "An error occured while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.7.1 Unable to relay for [email protected]. Please check the message recipients and try again."

I personally use Microsoft Outlook, could this be the issue?
I'm on XP, not Vista. And I'm not a programmer, just trying to upgrade my existing zencart site by doing a totally new redesign.

OOPs

I had totally forgotten to restart Mercury Mail when I changed it to mail.example.com. :blush:

I also had to reload my IIS Settings from my XP disc, some were missing! :shrug:

You also will need to add example.com as an outgoing mail server.

This is done by right click properties on an account.

Then scroll right to the bottom - on the right hand side you will see a "Outgoing Server" line right at the bottom.

Left click that, then you can see a box on the right.

Click the ADD button and and "example.com" (without quotes).

Then go back to each account and set it up with that outgoing server.
