Paypal Express not that express?

Hi i don't know whether i have got this wrong, i assumed (terrible thing i know) before i installed this, in my mind paypal express would take you to pay for you item (like you do with ipn) without going through the whole 4 page checkout process.

My paypal express module is taking me to 'review' a payment before being re-directed back to my site to complete even more pages: checkout > paypal > log in/add details > review your payment > back to my site for even more 'reviews' > checkout confirmation > actually paying for the item.

Is there anyway to cut out this whole middle process as i think i preferred ipn as going to paypal and back again i think would be a bit confusing for my customers as normally getting to paypal you just assume you've paid.

Have i set up this wrong, or can i set it up so paypal express takes you to my checkout > paypal > confirming @ paypal the order (pay now)?

These are my current settings:
Express Checkout: Select Cheapest Shipping Automatically
Yes

Express Checkout: Skip Payment Page
Yes

Express Checkout: Automatic Account Creation
No

Thanks for any avice on this, as at present i'm just not seeing many advantages to using this over ipn.

Append useraction=commit to the URL that you direct the buyer to after receiving your token, and you can skip that last step in the process.

The process with Express Checkout is:

• add to cart
• review shopping cart
• start checkout ... via Express Checkout button
• goto PayPal site, login, choose funding option, return to store
• **IF **auto-select cheapest shipping is NOT on, then shipping choices are offered
• **IF **skip-payment-page is not on, then the payment page is displayed
• IF coupons or gift certificates are available in your store, the shopper is offered a chance to use those -- via the payment page
• Final confirmation of order requires a simple click on Confirm button

The process without Express Checkout is:

• add to cart
• review shopping cart
• start checkout - via regular Checkout button
• Choose shipping options
• Choose payment options. Enter coupons and/or gift certificate info, and select PayPal as payment option
• On confirmation screen, click Confirm
• Go to PayPal site
• login, choose funding source, confirm payment
