Side boxes disappear with new template

I have been making my way through the "e-start Your Web Store with Zen Cart" book (GREAT BOOK!) and have had the following happen:
It is in the Template Override System section.

• I set up the new directories - includes/templates/magic and copied everything from includes/templates/classic.
• Created the new template by editing the template_info.php file in the magic directory.
• I went to the Admin console and switched to the new template.

When I refreshed the Store, all of the side boxes have disappeared. When I go to Tools-Layout Boxes Controller, all of the Sidebox statuses are Off.

Is this the way the new templates are supposed to work? Is there a way to keep the statuses of the old (Classic) template?

You have to also admin > tools > layoutboxes controller > reset to enable these for this new template
