Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

Hi

Really need a push in the right direction, ok i have a web server (streamline.net) and they tick all the boxes for what i need, i have a SSL Cert through them also, so all i need now is a Shop Cart so i can start integrating it onto my new website.

I am a total novice with shop carts, I have some HTML knowledge but my background is Graphic Design so I am trying to learn while I go along.

  1. uploaded Zen Cart as a zip file via my FTP program (fetch on the Mac OSX.4), unzipped it from the server software so now i have a folder called "shop"

  2. I set the file permissions on ht docs to read, write & execute to 777 (all boxes ticked in fetch>info) so the path so far is http://myserver/htdocs/shop/zc_install

  3. I open up my browser (safari 3.0.2 or firefox) and paste in http://myserver/htdocs/shop/zc_install and I keep getting>>>>

Forbidden 403 - You don't have permission to access /shop/zc_install on this server.

I have also tried the same with ocommerce cart and it also falls down when i get this far, any ideas why i can't install these, what i am doing wrong?

Cheers for looking and maybe helping me out! :'(

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

I'd also check the permissions on the zc_install folder and the index.php file inside it to be sure, but this sounds like the same over-aggressive 'htaccess file that it sounds like the other guy has.

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

Cheers for getting back so quick, I have just been on the streamline.net help pages and here is what they have to say;

http://www.streamlinesupport.net/index.php?page=show&id=21

if i am not mistaken then they are saying please use zen cart, but i think i need to do the Creating the configure.php files in the Getting Started section first as i overlooked that, doe, anyhow i will let you know how i get on.

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

Running with register_globals on has security implications and many hosts don't like doing it, so I guess yes, they are recommending Zen Cart over osCommerce. Another reason to add to the list.

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

Ok iam back again with more questions, i have open the zen tutorials page headed; (my question below)

**Creating the configure.php files
**Two files need to be created on the server. These are the configure.php files that identify the settings of your particular server and the location of the files that you just loaded. After they have been created, you will then need to change the permissions on these files.

NOTE: Changing permissions can be done via your FTP program with the chmod feature. Usually clicking right on a directory or filename will open a menu with this option (perhaps under "Properties")

On the server locate the file: /catalog/includes/dist-configure.php
Rename this file to configure.php and change the permissions to 777 (read-write-execute for all)

QUESTION: ok i can't find this file, if i go into shop/includes i can see 11 other folders (auto loaders, classes, extra cart actions through to templets, any idea where this file is?

Next, on the server locate the file: /catalog/admin/includes/dist-configure.php
Rename this file to configure.php and change the permissions to 777 (read-write-execute for all)

**I FOUND THIS FILE AND CHANGED IT
**

sorry to go step by step but its the only way i know how at the moment:frusty:

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

the file i couldn't find i created on my local computer and uploaded it to my hosting server/shop/includes/dist-configure.php

so that is in place, next i have gone through and set up all file permissions as stated on the tutorial so all that is left for me to do is go to my browser and start to install, so i type in http://www.myserver.co.uk/shop/zc_install/

Again i am getting Forbidden 403 You don't have permission to access /shop/zc_install/ on this server.

Now am i right in thinking that once i have done everything in the tutorial all i then have to do is copy http://www.myserver.co.uk/shop/zc_install into my web browser and then i should get up a welcome html page?

any ideas would be cool, many thanks

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

I'm afraid that you've just gone around in a circle without dealing with the original problem about why you're not able to access the zc_install folder.

The guy in the other thread to which Misty drew your attention solved the problem by renaming his .htaccess file, as per this FAQ entry. That's most likely what you will need to do to.

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

In picard's thread he talks about this .htaccess file being in the includes folder that is causing the problem but when i try and find this file it dosent exsist, i have done a search on the server and on my local machine but nothing there.

also he seems able to run the installer which has taken him a lot further down the road than where i am at, i can't even install it!;

"Ok the .htaccess file which is located in the includes folder is causing the problem. When i rename it the site works ok, however the admin area does not."

Also when i do find the file what should i name it?

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

As we can't see your server, we're flying blind here. You may not be able to see as much as you think either. For example when I try to see .htaccess files on my Mac, they don't showup. OSX refuses to admit that they're there, so to solve problems with them, I usually end up assuming that they're there, renaming them to something it will admit to, editing them, then naming them back and watching them disappear. It's all a bit spooky.

However, whether it's the .htaccess file (and there is one in the zc_install folder), or the folder permissions, or some other reason, not being able to read the zc_install folder is the cause of your problems. What explanation has your webhost given for you being shut out of there?

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

I send this to streamline:

Hi
I am trying to install Zen Cart to my website, i have read your help pages and it says that i can install it but you offer no support for this which is fair enough.

i have been trying to solve this issue on the zen cart website and the members there have said to come to you and ask why i keep getting a 403 error message when trying to install it to my server?

i have been trying to install this via my browser and http://myserver/htdocs/shop/zc_install which should pass me onto a setup screen, this is where it fails and comes up with:

Forbidden 403 - You don't have permission to access /shop/zc_install on this server.

surely i do have permission to install this, yes?no?

your help and thoughts are welcome.

I get this back

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

I'd recommend taking the "." off the beginning and also re-naming the one in the zc_install folder.

I don't expect this to work, but if it does that's great and if it doesn't, you will be in a position to return to streamline and simply ask why you are unable to access a folder in your account that has chmod 777 and no .htaccess to deny access.

Re: Can't install the cart!!!!!!!!!

**I tried what you said still nothing so i raised a ticket with SL again saying:
**
this is a server question not a shopping cart question, Can i ask why i am unable to access a folder in my account that has chmod 777 and no .htaccess file to deny access from my web browser, i really would like some advice on this as i picked streamline to host my ecommerce site over other hosts.

I dont want support just a realistic answer not an automated one.

Thanks

I get back

Hi ,

Thanks for your query.

There are no files uploaded to this directory. Within the URL:

http://yourserver/shop/zc_install

There are three further folders.

You will need to ensure that you navigate to the files in one of these folders.
