Coupon restrictions and linked product problem

I set up my coupons to exclude a category - "Makeup Kits and Brush Sets" (and gift certs but it's not enabled right now) as they are already discounted.

I add a linked product from the Kits and Sets category to "Brushes & Applicators" category so that the set would have more visibility.

If I purchase a brush set that's a linked product and use a coupon code, it applies the discount even though it's not supposed to.

Is there a way around this other than not linking the products? I like the advantage of having to modify only 1 product.

I'm not fully positive I understand, but did you know that you can also exclude specific products from coupons as well in the admin. Perhaps you can exclude that specific product as well.

Duh! Why didn't I think of that? That worked great. It would do for now...
