Pulling Sideboxes into non zencart pages

Hi, got a quick question for all of you.

I would like to be able to output a list of top level categories for use on non-zen cart pages. possibly using just a php include?

Any good ways to do this? or should I jot go ahead and write my own query?

You have to watch just using a "php include" as you run the risk of losing session data associated with the user by going from Zen to Non-Zen pages.
