New customer group - auto-join a group?

Hi.
Is it possible to make a new customer automatically join a discountgroup?
Let´s say a customer from a company and that company is a discountgroup with an discount, is there a way to make him a member of that group automatically,
i suppose in time with registration?

How do you intend to validate that a given customer is legitimately belonging to a certain company ?

ie: what specific criteria should be used to "trigger" the automatic group-membership linking ?

Would it be practical to do it on the basis of email address? Anyone registering with a "so-and-so.com" email address gets the discount? (Obviously this could still be spoofed too but it would be such a pain most people wouldn't do it.)

It would be possible, you'd just have to write some software. You would just need to decide on how you were going to decision the group membership.

giving this a bump - i have a similar issue, with a bit of a twist... I want to make each and every customer who signs up online a member of the 'new customers' group, qualifying them for the percent discount of first time buyer.

nevermind - i found it. for anyone wanting a similar solution, what I did was change the sql field to automatically contain the number of the group I wanted upon record creation. this way the discount can be applied immediately, and almost transparently

I have a slight twist to this. I am currently giving new customers a discount through the use of a Gift Certificate. In this way I limit the discount to one use for that customer. They get the discount once.

How would you automatically end the auto-discounts/ limit their use?

I have a related but different type of question:
How could I apply this auto-discount logic for reseller volume tiered discounts?

For example:
Tier 1 Pricing based on total purchase of $200 to $399 is 15%
Tier 2 Pricing based on total purchase of $400 - 699 is 20%

I know Zen Cart handles Customer Group pricing.
I also see the wide-spread use of discounts per quanity of per items in the cart. What I could not find is someting like an automatic Customer Group Price by range of shopping cart total.

I would really appreciate some ideas on this -- there may already be a solution, but after searching for some time, I couldn't find one.

I need to do something like this.. except I want a spot for a discount code on signup.. and if you put in a valid code you get put in to the group that gets that discount on an ongoing basis..

any help would be much appriciated.
