NOTHING can be as complicated as Shipping seems

I'm buiding a site for an Antiques Mall where all items are on consignment. As a result each item will have a different shipping cost. Surely there is a way to do this - that is assign a shipping cost to an item as it is added to the site.

They are both. Each consigner (there will be dozens) establishes a shipping charge for each item they offer for sale. That's the issue. Each item will have a shipping charge established by the seller.

You can use the per unit shipping mod for this. It calculates like this: (from the admin)

The shipping cost will be used to determin shipping charges based on: Product Quantity * Units (products_weight) * Cost per Unit

SO, if you set the "cost per unit" to be 1, then in the products weight you enter the cost (say its $10 shipping for that specific item, they'd enter 10 in the weight box when adding the product), so if the customer bought 2, it would be 2 * 10 * 1. or $20. or if they ordered 1 it would be $10. Each product could have its own "weight" added when the product is added.

If each shipper is setting their own price for the shipping then you will need to make each shipping cost a required attribute of the product.

I too am having a similar problem, and I think it would be best to select a shipping option in the product listing.
That way you should be able to set up various shipping modules with the correct shipping charge.
Another way but this would be more complex would be to have shipping defined not only from a store location but from different zones as well.

jettrue your solution works fine (After I zeroed out Shipping/Packaging).
Now is there a way to not display the "Product weight"?
I tried ")" in P/S, no help.

In Admin/Catalog/Product Types, go to Edit Layout (on the right side) of
your product type, and set Show Weight to 0.

Then, in Admin/Configuration/Layout Settings/Shopping Cart - Show Totals, set to 0 to prevent weight from showing in the shopping cart.
