Installing Zen cart in the root folder!

The install text says to create a folder named such as catalog, store etc. and that is the usual way I have always installed Zen. A redirect is then needed for Zen to open when your domain url is used or you need a landing page with a link to your store.

Is Zen a security risk if I install it into the root folder. Doing this would also place the htaccess files in the root and I have also heard this is a no-no. I want to open my store with this:

http://www.mystorsite.com/

Instead of this:

http://www.mystorsite.com/catalog/

You do not have to use a subdirectory. You can install directly in the root.

While it is true you can install ZC in the root, this becomes a problem if you decide later to use Easy Populate (EP). With EP you need to have an uploads directory in the root directory above the store. This is the situation I find myself in. I don't know how to work around it.

It seems if I need this root directory (higher than my store) I need to start over with a new install.

This is what I am working on but I wish to get around the need to use:
http://www.mystorsite.com/catalog/ and use
http://www.mystorsite.com instead. Any advice for me?

If you're on an Apache server, you can use mod_alias, mod_rewrite, or symlinks to make your urls and file structure appear to be whatever you want them to be.

I am really stuck. I have gotten another webserver and will move my files over there under "shop", I will have a zillion references to edit. I really don't know what I am doing. I am afraid to experiment with my live site because it is working but in serious need of product rearrangement which is why I need EP.

So my plan is to move everything over to the new server and see if I can get that to work then if it does, I will move my domain name over.

If anybody has an easier way to do this, please help me. explain. I am open to any and all suggestions.

I've only used EP on a couple sites, and not recently, but never had any problems using it from the root.

Maybe I did not say that correctly. The uploads directory must be in the Root and Zen Cart must be a lower directory. ie. http://www.mystorsite.com/catalog/

When ZC is installed in the directory catalog or shop or whatever then you can place the required uploads directory for EP higher. In the root directory.

come back brandtim - I just discovered that I am on an Apache Server. Whew! I am not really bright with this stuff but as I keep poking around, I am amazed at what I discover.

Ok so this is great. I have an advantage because i am on an Apache Server but I don't have a clue as to what you are refering to or what to do next. Sigh!!!

One minute I am elated because I discovered something and the next I feel like a dunce. I think I need some professional help. Yep! both kinds. LOL

Well it is not EP that is at the root but Zen Cart was installed at the root. EP requires that EP have a folder called uploads higher than EP. How can I do that when ZC is the highest it can be?

I don't think you're reading the EP documentation correctly. Many people are using it with ZenCart installed in the root of their public web directory. I haven't used it myself, but expect that EP's uploads folder need to be within the EP folder, not above the ZenCart root folder. There wouldn't be any need for that nor would it make any sense.
