A question about shipping

Hi,

The client I'm setting up a shop for uses UPS Ground, but he also includes insurance on all products he ships. He actually told me how much he normally pays per product for shipping from the east coast to the midwest of the US (about $10). He also told me how much he normally pays for anything being shipped to the west coast of the US (about $14). These two prices he told me includes the insurance. So my question is, what is the best way to set up shipping in the shipping module that reflects these two prices and the regions or zones? There is no shipping tax involved. The weight per product is about 5lbs including the box.

I'd really appreciate the wisdom of those who have tackled the shipping modules and won. :)

You could use the Per Unit perweightunit shipping module and clone it ...

Example:
perweightuniteastcoast
perweightunitwestcoast

Once cloned, build Zones for these two to divide the US between them ...

Set 1 to have a rate of 1 and the other the rate of 1.4 ...

Set the weight of the product on the products_weight to be 10 for the east for $10 ... then the west clone will take this amount and multiple that by 1.4 for $14 ...

Now each product would be managed separately with rates of $10 per product for the east and $14 per product for the west ...

Should you need a different amount, say $5 for the east, then 5 on the products_weight is $5 for the east and $7 for the west ...

To clone it I would have to go into the the modules--shipping--perweightunit.php and duplicate that file saving it as perweightuniteastcoast.php and as perweightunitwestcoast.php. Is that correct? I just want to make sure I am understanding your directions. Then I build my zones.

One more question. I'm having to add sales tax for Florida since the client is based in Florida. When I create the two major zones, I have been trying to figure out how to add sales tax just for Florida. I'm just not seeing it. I've gone over this several times. The only zones available now are East Coast and West Coast in the Locations/Taxes--For Tax Rates Zones. Am I missing something somewhere?

I have figured out how to clone the shipping module.

You can make as many Zones as you want ...

Make separate Zones for Taxes vs Shipping or Payment and think of Zones as separate groups to address a specific need ...

Example Zones:
Florida Tax - only add Florida to it and configure with Tax details
East Coast Shipping - only add Eastcoast States and use with shipping
West Coast Shipping - only add Westcoast States and use with shipping
