Attempting Move from OS Commerce to Zen Cart - Need a Bit of Handholding

Hi all, a friend of mine currently has an OS Commerce shop and is thinking of moving it over to Zen Cart. I have read the following tutorial and others:

https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=10

From the sounds of it, should I have a Zen Cart install running on her host's account? Meaning that there will be Zen Cart and OS Commerce running at the same time.

Also, she has a customized index.php file as a frontpage for her current OS Commerce shop; would we be able to bring that over or make a new one?

Thanks for any assist.

In that situation I would suggest you have Zen Cart running in a subdirectory while you are setting up and configuring. ( You can move it to the root later)

The customized index - depends on what was done, but you should be able to duplicate it.

Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

Thanks Kim. I'll do just that and try and get it running properly and then populated first before going live.

I've got the manual here and this is the second ZC site I am setting up so, hopefully, won't need to ask too many questions.

Actually, I do have a question, should I move the database(s) over and then customize the site or should I customize the site and then move the database(s)?

BTW, ZC is all set up and running in its own subdirectory.

Re: Attempting Move from OS Commerce to Zen Cart - Need a Bit of Handholding

Ok, I've decided to move the database over first, why bother customizing if the data doesn't work right?

Anyway, I've done the comparison between the OSC structure and the Zen structure and the instructions now say:

"you'll first need to empty all your zen categories* and products* database tables."
Can anyone tell me what that means? Does that mean I have go into phpMyAdmin on the host and ???

Thanks for any assist!

Yes, you will need to login in control panel and open phpMyAdmin for that
you can select OSC database that you want to extract information from
Click on 'Export' Tab. Under the 'Export' section, highlight all tables that you want to export, specifically anything that starts with:
categories_*
products_*

Hope this helps you:)

Re: Attempting Move from OS Commerce to Zen Cart - Need a Bit of Handholding

Thanks for the quick reply! The export of the DB structure was done earlier and it's now sitting on my desktop as a file called "oscdata.sql".

I've gone into phpMyAdmin and have "emptied" out the following:

zen_products_options_types
zen_products_options_values
zen_products_types

The instructions now say:

"Then, you can run the SQL that you save from step 3 (oscdata.sql) in the zen DB."

How do you do that? Do I simply go back to phpMyAdmin and hit the "Import" tab at the top? It's looking good so far...

Re: Attempting Move from OS Commerce to Zen Cart - Need a Bit of Handholding

I'm thinking that I should first "Import" the "zenstructure.sql" through phpMyAdmin. That makes sense because why else would I have modified it in Step 4? Then, make sure that the products* and catagories* rows are empty and, finally, do the "Import" of the data held in the "oscdata.sql" file. Right?

Re: Attempting Move from OS Commerce to Zen Cart - Need a Bit of Handholding

Ok, I bit the bullet and decided to "Import" the modified "zenstructure.sql" file through phpMyAdmin. An error came up:

Error

 **SQL query:**
          --

-- Database: 'catcat_zc1'

--
-- Table structure for table 'zen_categories_description'

CREATE TABLE zen_categories_description(categories_id int( 11 ) NOT NULL default '0',
language_id int( 11 ) NOT NULL default '1',
categories_name varchar( 32 ) NOT NULL ,
PRIMARY KEY ( categories_id, language_id ) ,
KEY idx_categories_name( categories_name )
) ENGINE = MYISAM DEFAULT CHARSET = latin1;

#1050 - Table 'zen_categories_description' already exists

:censored: So, I then decided to try simply "Import" the "oscdata.sql" file through phpMyAdmin and I get this error:

Error

SQL query:

--
-- Database: 'catcat_osc1'

--
-- Dumping data for table 'categories_description'

INSERT INTO categories_description( categories_id, language_id, categories_name )
VALUES ( 25, 1, 'Cloth' ) ;

#1146 - Table 'catcat_zc1.categories_description' doesn't exist

:censored: So...where am I going wrong? The faq/tutorial says I should go back and compare the "zenstructure.sql" against the "oscstructure.sql" but I'm pretty sure I didn't make a mistake since I used BBEdit's "Find Differences" tool. :dontgetit
