Need help installing "additional customers fields" module

I'm trying to install the module "additional customers fields v2.55" and I really don't comprehend some of the installation instructions. I'm not a programmer, I know zip about php, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

**"Simply upload all the files, from this ZIP package, - except for the following ones:" (list of files snipped)

"Use a comparing tool software for the listed files above."

"Once all the files has been uploaded successfully + compared from the listed files above with yours:"**

What does that mean? What's a "comparing tool"? Where do I get one? What do I do with it? What am I meant to be comparing - the module's files with the versions already on my server (which I have indeed downloaded and backed up)? And if so, what differences am I looking for, and what do I do when I find them? After the files have been "compared," do I upload them then? Googling for comparing tool software just gets me a couple of posts on these forums that leave me none the wiser.

"Note: All paragraphs that needs to be added to your files, from the listed files above, are identified, with this title MOD name, from the beginning to the end."

Utter gibberish to me, I'm afraid. Where are these paragraphs that need to be added to the files?

I beg your indulgence. I'm really lost. A recent server move from a Windows server to a Linux server made my old cart software inoperable, and we don't have any money to buy a new cart or have a professional set it up (we're a very very broke small theater). Thanks.

Re: Need help installing "additional customers fields" module

Have you looked at the support thread for this mod? The author had big ideas but was not really up to making them work properly, in addition to sometimes struggling with English.

A member posted (post # 415!) about some fixes that apparently helped others get the mod working, but it is not a job for other than fully competent PHP coders.

PS - "comparing tool" means something like WinMerge, which will show you the differences between two files or sets of files/folders. It's a useful thing to have.

Thanks for the pointers and your patience. I'm still navigating my way around and trying to learn where things are; sometimes I just don't use the proper search terms because I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Sigh - I guess I'll give up on that one. I don't suppose there's an easy way to add some text - preferably with a link - to the page? Or does any modification at all of the customer signup page involve complex coding?

Will I regret it if I look into the pricing-by-attributes module or is that one more straightforward... ?

Price by attributes is a standard feature of Zen Cart. Did you mean the Stock by Attributes mod? That was written by Kuroi, who is one of our best coders.

Yup, sorry, I mis-spoke. I'll take a look at the thang, then. :)
