It's the cart home page that I'm most concerned about since that is the page that most users will call first.
I'm not really sure how caching works, but my understanding is that it basically takes a snapshot of a called page and stores it. When that same page is called again, the cached page is displayed instead of having to rebuild it from scratch.
What I'm noticing on my potential future host is that when the cart home page is first called, the parse time is rather long (I've been reading optimization threads and stuff too). So, I enabled the zen caching (file), which seems to help.
Given my understanding of caching, I was wondering how long that saved cart home page would last. In other words, I'd like to make sure it's there 'round the clock. However, I probably don't understand caching (big surprise).
Many thanks, Dr.

The caching you're referring to is only related to extracting cart-wide settings from the database. That cache lasts for 5 minutes. I don't think what you're experiencing is related to that cache in any way.
More likely, your long parse times are a result of your webserver's database (which does its own caching) needing to reload information.
The biggest performance bottleneck of a dynamic website is database tuning. If the database itself is tuned with lots of memory available to it, for caching, calculations, etc, it'll run lickety-split. If not, or if it's overloaded by too many people hitting it (for the resources available to it), then things will be slower.
Long parse times on the first hit to a page, but not on subsequent hits does indicate that a cache is being refreshed. If your site doesn't have a lot of traffic, which would keep your site's data in cache continuously, then it's not surprising that there may be occasional delays in the first hit by a given visitor.
If you wish to improve the speed/performance, talk to your host. If they cannot or will not do anything about it, consider another host who will.

Would there be some specific mysql settings that I should let the host know about?
If I could be specific in which settings they should adjust, maybe they will do it.
Many thanks
