multiple USA zones, shipping rates

OK, I'm stumped.

How do I get a shipping module setup so that I can divide the USA into different zones by location and then have a rate table for each zone by weight ?

This would seem like the most obvious, commonly needed way of calculating shipping. You have different rates to different states or regions and obviously that goes up by weight.

I have used the zone rate module many times for stores in the UK and Europe because it defines zones by country but I see no way of changing the zones to states.

I will have a similar dilemma for Canadian rates which will all be different and higher per lb.

(All items ship from Ohio and only to the USA and Canada)

No, that won't work because the 'zone rate' shipping module defines its own 'zones' by country using the two letter ISO country code. It does not use the other kind of 'zones' that you can create in the admin area as you describe above.

Surely, this is a common thing? I cannot imagine that everyone ships using the same rate to all 50 states whether it's next door or 3000 miles away.

I would say for US and Canada only that most use Fedex, UPS or USPS to calculate the shipping

I am stumped with this as well, as I need to specify state level shipping rates and I can't seem to find any way to do it. I have already setup EMS shipping zones for country levels, how do I specify for state levels?
