Error uploading product images

The problem occurs when I tried to upload a product image to the store. I get the error...

"Error: Catalog images directory is not writeable: /home/mydomain/public_html/store/images/"

It had worked fine in the past.

Using FileZilla FTP, I am able to put images to that directory without problems. And FileZilla shows permission of folder to be 755.

Using webhost control panel, I also see permission 755.

Is the permission should be 755? That is what I thought it should be.

During ZenCart image resizing process, I get a whole bunch of PHP error due to permission related issue.

What could be wrong? What else can I check? Thanks.

It needs to be 777 if you want to be able to manage images via a browser or PHP code.

It works when I change the permission to 777. However, the strange thing is that in another store on another host, the permission is set to 755 and it works fine.

Also I'm not sure how the permission had changed from before since I was able to upload images in the past without problem. The problem just "suddenly" happened.

I'm just wondering if there is any security issues with changing it to 777?
